Deep within earth’s chasm, in the chilled air, the sounds of dripping water and the tiny squeaks and whimpers of six newborn pups filled the atmosphere like a gentle lullaby. The first-time mother was in a steady state of being half awake, with sleep threatening once again, while trying to fight her exhaustion. The pups were being especially noisy. All six of the pups were wide awake and hungry, though their eyes and ears were still closed. Their little infant noises were so wretchedly adorable, Datura could hardly stand it sometime. They smelled so wonderful and new, milky breath sweet. She had produced sons beyond her expectations. It was hard to believe that the squirmy little wolves belonged to her – they were Goliath’s. Everything was perfect… for now, anyway.
The full magnitude of motherhood had yet to settle in for the tired wolfess, let alone the reality of having six pups to feed, watch, and protect. It did not feel like a chore. It did not even feel real yet. The thought of leaving her little ones for longer than a minute to stretch her legs and relieve herself nearby was upsetting, those innate maternal instincts already seizing control. She was not a loving creature by nature – or at least, she had never been before. But everything was different now. She had sons and daughters to watch out for, to raise and to teach, and to fulfill the vow she had made to their father. She would make Goliath proud, with every strong son born to wage war, and perfect daughters to carry on his legacy – their legacy, now interwoven together for eternity, as long as their offspring thrived and multiplied to terrorize Anikira.
She had barely moved for two days now, essentially glued to the stone ground, and her empty belly rumbled angrily to remind her of her own hunger. She knew she had to eat soon, but every simple task seemed difficult. Pale chin resting on her forepaws, Datura uttered a private sigh. She hoped Goliath or Zohartze would come to see her again soon, in part so that she could fawn over her pups with them, and so that she could beg them to bring her some meat. Her mouth watered at the very thought of food. The pups took all of her energy and time, and they could not even see or speak yet.
