Messoria wasn’t really sure why she was here, if she was being honest with herself. Each delicate step that took her closer to the caverns was a step that made her question her sanity. Of course she knew that Datura’s time had come; all of Kairos seemed to know it now, buzzing with life. The first pups had been born on Ina’mos, little heirs that consisted of four lovely sons. Messoria could only imagine how very proud Datura was; probably nauseatingly so. Originally she’d had no plans to go anywhere near the Mexican female and her litter. She was certain that nothing good would come of it – there would be irritation, suspicion, anger, and little else. So she’d kept her distance, listening to others whisper of it while never offering her own opinion.
Until now.
Messoria paused for a brief moment as she approached the mouth of the cavern. This was her last chance to turn away; if she stepped inside, she would be spotted. She wavered, her head lowered as she considered. Her curiosity was what drove her, the desire to see the tiny (or, with Goliath as the father, the not so tiny) bundles of life strong. She herself was eagerly awaiting a sign of her own pregnancy, questioning everything that happened with her body. Her lack of appetite - was it an early sign, or just her worrying that drove the desire to eat away? Her increased irritation – from restless sleep or something more? Messoria was no fool. She knew she was not mistaken about the subtle yet noticeable swell of her rounding belly. She had conceived, and yet still, she was terrified that someone she would still be wrong. It was driving her up the wall.
After a moment she sighed to herself, stepping forward. She’d come all of this way, and she would hesitate no longer. She paused just inside of the entrance, lifting her muzzle high as her ebony nose dragged in the various scents surrounding her. Datura, inevitably, and a hint of Goliath beneath it, although not currently present. And then there was something else, a plethora of scents that were unfamiliar to her, and yet she recognized them immediately. Those would be the pups. It was with something similar to anticipating that Messoria strode deeper into the cave, making no move to hide the sound of her approach. She did not want to startle Datura, for she was a new mother and Messoria had no doubt that she would spring to action if she thought harm might come to her pups. The chestnut streaked she-wolf continued deeper until finally a flash of mottled amber fur gave her pause.
”Datura. It’s only me,” Messoria said, announcing her presence firmly and yet softly in case the pups were sleeping. She could not see them yet, her amber eyes focused warily on their mother instead. How would Datura react to her arrival, she wondered? Likely not in a way that was considered positive, but this no longer gave Messoria pause as she took another step forward. Her curiosity was overwhelming now, her expression guarded as she tilted her head just a fraction to the right.
”I see you survived the ordeal,” she said wryly, her tone suggesting that it wasn’t something to celebrate. A moment later the snark was gone as she took another step and then halted, close enough to speak quietly but far enough away so as not to pose a threat. She had no desire to speak amiably with Datura; she simply wanted a glimpse of the supposedly perfect little pups that Kairos was buzzing over.
”May I see them?” She asked, narrowing her eyes considerately as she added the next part as an afterthought. ”I hear they’re quite lovely.”
No matter how much she despised Datura, Messoria had no hatred in her heart for her offspring.
