The cold nights spent in the mountains were over. Winter was gone, and it was Summit’s favorite season. The flowers were blooming everywhere he turned while he was hunting. The vivid colors were rather distracting, but the brute had been successful in his search for fresh meat. He had unearthed a large stoat, fattened by the abundance of the season. As he retraced his paw prints, a sudden sound caught his attention. The snowy brute froze in his steps, eyes wide as he scanned the area for the source of the sound. He saw only a pair of birds pecking around among the leaves strewn along the forest floor, paying the large wolf no heed. The distinct scent of salt was heavy in the humid air, which meant the ocean was near. This part of the continent was much warmer than the places Summit had wandered with Katari, and since his love preferred the sunshine, then Summit was happy to stay there. The lands were not claimed by any pack, but that didn’t mean all was safe and secure.
He was growing cautious, more aware of what could be lurking nearby. Before, he had been rather careless about where he wandered. He had wandered into claimed territory back then – a pompous brute called Ryker had soured his opinion of packs and alphas in an instant. Summit was not privy to the news of Anikira, about which packs were thriving and which ones had ceased to exist all together, in the same way that Summit’s natal pack had gone extinct. Even the mightiest packs had fallen away. Nothing was certain – except Katari. She was waiting for his return, and with his prize clutched in his jaws, he began to pick his way back to her side.
Every day felt surreal. Summit was happier than ever, impossibly happy and annoyingly cheerful. For the first time, it felt as if all the pieces were falling together – every misfortune suffered, every tragedy and loss – all of it had brought him this far, to this place. He thought about the first time he had encountered Katari, what felt like a lifetime ago, talking to thin air. The Arctic brute had learned the very first day to accept Ren for what he was – a source of comfort for Katari, and a beloved old friend that had helped her through countless traumas. Even if no one else could see Ren, he meant something to Katari, and so he meant something to Summit. He never questioned Ren. Sometimes Ren was present, and Katari spoke to him and he spoke to her. Other times, he was entirely absent, and Summit never knew why. He no longer viewed these behaviors as strange. Like everything else about Katari, it was one more quirk that he relished. Without a doubt, there was no one else alive quite like his mate. For better or worse, he would always return to her.
But where would they go next? Now, he had a potential family to consider. It had been a long time since he had any live relatives, and it would be his first time siring a litter… If it had worked, anyway, Summit was not too savvy about this sort of thing. But he knew without a doubt that a litter of pups would change everything about their lives. Would their constant wandering be unhealthy for little pups? Could he manage to keep them all safe in a dangerous world, filled with too many dangers to count? The nagging worry had dampened his enthusiasm… barely.
”Here!” He announced his presence through a mouthful of stoat fur when Katari came into view once more. "'s for you."
