“I know I saw it here somewhere.”
The large wolf said as he entered the dark swamp. He took slow and careful steps as looked around, his ears were erected and his nose was pointed toward the sky.
“I can smell him.”
A wounded deer had fled into the swamp from protection as Dire was trying to catch it. Although, the animal wasn't too bright to think the swamp was the safest place to go. Dire himself wasn’t worried about the crocodiles that ruled the swamp, but the fact they might get to his dinner before he did. His belly rumbled and his mouth salivated at the thought of juicy deer meat. It was a great catch and he wasn’t about to let anyone else get his prize before him. He could sense the wounded animal, it had broken its back leg and it ran clumsily threw the swamp, making it very easy to follow, despite that he couldn’t see it in sight. He took his time as he follow the trail, following the broken branches and the slight hints of blood upon the grass from the wounded beast. A smirk pushed at the edge of his maw as he lifted his head up. This was going to be too easy. It wasn’t really a kill to test his strength though, for any average wolf can kill a deer that is wounded as such. It wasn’t much of a challenge, but he still enjoyed the chase.
“I’m getting closer…” he whispered to himself as he soon spotted the deer grazing on some grass about ten feet away. Dire lowered himself into the grass, trying to keep himself hidden from the animal. He began to slowly crawl forward until he was the right length so he could leap forward and attack. However, right before he could do that, a crocodile leapt from the waters with its shiny teeth bare as he reared for the deer. The deer caught the sight of the croc just in time and quickly dashed away, only damaging its leg even further. “Damn it!” Dire cursed as he revealed himself from his hiding spot. He watched as the crocodile retreated into the water, he watched as it rippled and that grew still, it was almost as if it was never there to begin with. Dire sighed and shook his head as he turned and began to head in the direction that the deer ran. He knew that it wouldn’t be able to walk soon and he was right – for he soon spotted the deer heaving heavily on the ground.
Dire licked his maw as he made his way closer; however before he could reach his beloved meal, the smell of another wolf engulfed his nostrils. He lowered his hears and let out a growl. He was not about to let anyone claim his meal.
