Mikiu lowered her head and stared at her reflection in the cool water. Staring back at her was a younger version, a happier version, someone that she used to know. Mikiu turned her eyes away from it, for it hurt her to see it. She didn’t want to remember who she was once. In all her life she only had a few moments of complete happiness, before that she was living in hell and after that she was running on autopilot for the sake of her children, who she felt she didn’t do justice. She turned back, her reflection stared right back, mocking her. Her brows furrowed as she smacked at the water, breaking up the reflection. She shook her head as she sat down at the bank and closed her eyes. She had wandered a bit away from the comfort of her pack. Although she enjoyed being around her pack mates, she still liked to be by herself at times. Even more so like today, as it was the birthday of her children. They turned two years old. She couldn’t believe it. She missed them dearly and couldn’t help but wonder where they were now and how they were doing. All she wanted was for them to be happy. That was enough to carry her on until death took her.
“I wish you were here Haiku, to be by my side,” she whispered to herself, remembering her mate. They were together but barely a year before he was snatched away from her. She had first witnessed the murder of her beloved twin sister and then her mate – all by her wretched parents. Just the thought of them caused her to grind her teeth together. She wished she could have her revenge, but she was secretly terrified of them. Even to this day she slept with one eye open and she always had her guard up. Afraid one day they were going to find her and force her back. She had not seen them in a year though and perhaps by now they had moved on and found someone else to torture…but she wasn’t positive. She always felt like they were nearby, watching her, just waiting for a perfect opportunity to mess up her life once more.
That is why she couldn’t let anyone close. She joined a pack to be near others, for the safety of herself, but even then she kept herself at a distant. Everyone she loved was killed (besides her children that she knows of, but she doesn’t like to think of that). If they were somehow watching her, if she found happiness again, surely it would be taken away again – and there would be no denying that it was her fault. For she knew better now.
“It is far better for me to be alone,” she whispered to herself.
