It was something that Aurik swore he would never do.
This pack had quite the reputation swirling around it. Aurik may not have truly "heard" things, but he was fairly certain that any spawn of the late Ferus alphas had to be quite a piece of work. There was no way he was going to allow Roka to go into this unprotected, and it was with that revelation that Aurik marched forward to what might very well be his own doom. Surely Kairos could not be as bad as he imagined, but that did not help to quell his fears. He was not the picturesque pack member by any means. His deafness worked against him in many ways; he was seen as handicapped, and in some ways this was very true. He had to adapt in ways that others did not in order to get by. But that did not mean he was not a valuable resource. There was also one thing that Aurik tended to keep to himself.
He was not born deaf.
Aurik had kept this little bit of information to himself for the most part. His mother had informed him when he was younger that it was her fault. However, the male could never truly place the blame on his mother. She had cared for him the best she could given the circumstances. While he was not certain on the actual illness that caused his hearing to go away forever, he did know that it was due to exposure to the elements. It had been so long ago that he had no true recollection of ever hearing. That might have been for the best, as he grew up well adapted to his particular challenge.
While many looked at him as a weak link, he was strong in heart and loyal to a fault. After all, why would he be trudging to the borders of Kairos if this were not the fact? Aurik was willing to face down the alpha of the largest pack on the continent in order to be there to support his friend. And while he did not approve of her decision, he was not going to leave her to face this new challenge on her own. That was what a true friend would do, was it not?
And so with a heavy heart, the grey male strode up to the recent scent markers that indicated the borders of the Kairos pack. There was no better place than here. The male would not dare to set one paw inside the pack's borders without approval. He was not suicidal, nor was he stupid to pack etiquette. He needed to lay as low as possible and maintain full neutrality and respect all their customs if he even stood a chance at existing here.
But he would do it for Roka.
And with a lunge of his head, the mottled male cried out for the alpha of the territory, summoning any member of the pack that might have the authority to bring him into their ranks. This was the end. But perhaps it was also the beginning.
