Peering Through Destiny [Wynter]

    Wynter peered down at the stranger from his perch atop the mouth of a large cave. Not many people passed by these parts, not that the young wolf knew. Though he was only a traveler, and had been staying there for 6 nights, and was already planning to leave by the next day, he was familiar enough with the area to find it strange. Just like every morning, the strong scent of earth was the dominant aroma of the area, which always seemed to provide a comfort to him, however it rendered his nose blind of the wolf that was not a mile away bye now. The northern direction seemed to be his chosen path, but that was also where Wynter was residing. He slowly rose from his fetal position and took a more alerted stance. It was clear that this was a large, male wolf that he was seeing. It had the darkest coat he had ever seen, but he wasn't close enough to make out his eye color just yet. He scurried down the mossy stones he traversed earlier, trying to get a vantage point that gave him enough confidence to sleep.

     He hadn't had an appropriate meal for his size in a few days, but he was scrapping by with the nearby plant life. He could sense the other wolf by way of smell now. It was comforting to know he could assess the wolf's distance accurately now, being that with sight, it would be hard to judge it's distance without being in it's sight in the process. Just then, there was a voice, holding him back. The wolf was nearly below him now, but he didn't notice, as he was now trying to traverse the rock with the pounding in his head getting louder and heavier. His vision was flashing now, and he had no time to brace himself as he lost his balance and slipped off a rock close to the ground, but still moderately high. He landed with a large thud, his force killing the plants below.

    Everything was dark for the young wolf. He didn't remember ever having an attack like this, but then again, he didn't remember the last 30 he'd had. Inside his mind played endless forgotten memories, none of which he would remember if he woke up. He saw visions of her mother, and he saw something he knew in his heart was his father. The visions wouldn't stop playing, each cycle becoming more and more horrific. His memories began to resurface more and more. Each time he remembered he forgot, and experienced them again and again. Not that he would remember. A few more minutes went by and he began to see a light, and hoped for the best as he followed it.

The feeling of rock and stone beneath the pads of his paws was much different than the soft cushion of grass or dirt of a forest. Having spent most his life in a forest, this rocky terrain was a definite change for the black brute. Caves dotting the rolling hills of this valley, jagged rock peeking out like eyes from the lush green of the landscape. Each cave mouth was a different size, and the one Rikez sat in was one of the larger of the surrounding caverns. He was not the kind of wolf who welcomed small, tight spaces. In order to rest, he needed to be able to see out the cave mouth. Who knows who could pass through these lands and give the black brute trouble? Although a smaller cave may keep him more hidden from a potential enemy, his chance of a quick escape was drastically lower. The more open cavern would just have to do.

He stood completely and stretched, his limbs splaying out in front of him and his rump sticking in the air. His tail curled behind him and he loosed the tense muscles of his shoulders and back. He had travelled the past few days almost non-stop, the energy from a good hunt spurring him on until he had reached the hills. Now, he was tired again. As he yawned, sharp white canines glinted in the sun and his pink tongue curled. Ears flat against his head, he squeezed his amber eyes shut. His stomach wasn’t dangerously empty, but there was a slight feeling of hollowness in his gut that was beginning to nag at the back of his mind. Today, he would have to hunt.

He stepped out of his designated cave and into the bright glare of sunshine, sore paws welcoming the soft padding of grass underneath. He had barely stepped into the open before a great and sudden thud shook the hills. A cloud of plants and dirt sprayed up right next to the black brute, and he sprang to the side with a tearing snarl. Assuming a defensive stance, Rikez lowered his head menacingly as he faced the sudden threat. His teeth were bared in a snarl, auds pressed against his skull and tail bristling. The fur of his haunches stood on end in an attempt to make himself bigger. What could possibly go wrong now? His thoughts were a scribble of irritation and anger at being disturbed.

The stark white thing lying in the grass was another wolf. Its scent was clear now, though Rikez had not detected it before. It was lying almost motionless, besides the steady twitch of its limbs. It almost looked like it was having a fit. Its bright fur stood out like a beacon against the colors of the landscape, almost as if a bit of the ground had been erased and replaced with pure white. Great, the black brute thought. Just what I need. A run-in with another stranger.

Wynter slowly saw light, a white, blinding light, which faded out as quickly as it appeared. Then he began to see color again. Just grainy, fuzzy pixels, until slowly, the resolution set in, and he could see he was on ground, and he was fine, though he forgot why he fell. Probably slipped, it happens, or at least that's what he told himself. He slowly sat up and shook his head as if to wake himself up. He looked at his surroundings, maybe the wolf wasn't to close yet? He turned around. The enormous black wolf was posed behind him, giving the plainest, and most readable sign of  unwelcome. Embarrassed, he quickly raised to his paws. He walked forward quickly with his back facing the wolf and turned back quickly to face him. He could see where he had fallen quite plainly, as it was signified by the pile of dead plants on the ground. He glanced back at the wolf. He still couldn't see his eyes. So close, that he could make out the grooves in his face. Not his eyes. In that moment, he gave a long stare into those eyes. Anger. He couldn't even see the eyes, because they were shrouded by the dazzling fog of anger the never seemed to dissipate or lessen. In that moment time stopped, so may questions filling his head. How could a wolf filled with so much anger even go on? After what seemed like an eternity, he snapped out of it. "You have no time to worry about others-", the old voice in his head said. "-If you can not even take care of yourself. If you are not careful, this wolf could kill you in less than a second, if you are not ready to book it". His voice was right, but he never listened to the old voice. Besides, this person needed a lot more help than Wynter needed. Now, he thought to himself. "If I can just get some words out. Please, just try!" He thought. "H-h-hello."

The white wolf stirred as Rikez stood over him, growling. He was a tiny brute, noticably shorter and less stocky than Rikez himself. Clearly dissoriented, the strange new wolf got shakily to his feet, teetering on his paws before gaining his footing. He shook his head as if clearing it of debris. Although he had only fallen from a nearby cave mouth, it looked as if the white wolf had hit his head. Rikex scoffed outwardly as the white wolf stood there with his back to the black brute. What an idiot, Rikez growled in his head. This wolf is as helpless as a pup!

The white brute finally turned and saw Rikez. Immediately frozen in fear, the smaller wolf's bright yellow eyes widened. Good. He fears me, as he should. Rikez thought dark thoughts as the newcomer cowered before him and drew a shakey breath. "H-h-hello." Rikez let out a short, dark chuckle at the other wolf's pathetic attempt at an introduction. Raising his black head boldly, he laid his deep amber eyes on the other brute and spoke to him in a low rumbling growl. "Hello stranger. I am called Rikez." His name came out as a fearsome bark, enough to make even a growl wolf wince in fear. Rikez did not wish to stay around and humor poor, dissoriented wolves. He could be doing much important things. Hunting, for instance. Or wandering the lands as he had been doing, ignoring pack borders and scaring off anything that dared come to close to him. Anything would really be better than standing here in front of this sad excuse for a wolf. He had encountered too many wolves in the past few weeks for his liking. He thought of the tiny femme he had fled from on the beach and the grey brute he had encountered in the nearby forest. Both had been a waste of his time. Why would this wolf be any different?

He was right to judge the book by it's cover. The large wolf barked something inaudible. He paused for a minute. Oh. Rikez. That made sense. No it didn't. It's his name dummy! Oh. He felt like laughing in his stupidity.

     The large thing in front of him hadn't become less threatening since he had seen him from afar. Wynter tilted his head. The wolf looked to be the exact opposite of him. Maybe that was the explanation to his behavior. No, I don't think the way you look has anything to do with it he told himself. Well, it certainly seemed like it to him. Not that he doubted the wolf's strength, or his resolve to kill, but he was as scared as he should have been. Of course he was scared, but he would be scared of anything popping up behind him, especially if it kept it's most threatening pose for such a long period of time. No, he would say he was more scared of people. The old voice would say something about being "shy", not that he knew anything about what that was. He figured anything the voice said spewed nonsense from the first word.

     He took another breath. "Um. I-uh, stay over there" he turned around and pointed his face toward the cave he was currently residing in. "You can come if you want, I'm really just traveling anyway, if you'd give me a second, that cave is big enough for 20 of your size." He laughed. That was fine, if he could lessen the mood and make it less bothersome, the better. This wolf seemed like he did not want to be pestered further. "And I have some food too, I was never gonna eat it anyway." Truthfully, it was left by the previous owner of the cave. He wasn't much of a meat eater either. He rarely even took bites of the vast supply of catch, and it would have been wasted anyway.

The foolish white brute was chattering away in front of him like a pup, nodding in the direction of his cave. The white wolf paused then, and Rikez had a moment to process what he was saying to him. He wants me to stay with him? Rikez couldn’t believe it. Was this wolf insane, or just clueless? Who would invite a snarling, angry wolf like himself into their cave? Rikez couldn’t fathom why this brute would welcome him closer. Was he not being fearsome enough? He thought back to the last loner he came across, a small grey brute with a trembling frame. That is the proper way to greet a beast. With fear.

Rikez was about to snap a cold remark at the other brute when his ears suddenly perked. "And I have some food too, I was never gonna eat it anyway.” Suddenly, the white brute was not completely useless to him. Rikez let his muzzle relax, the wrinkles smoothing out and his jaw hanging slack. What greater use is there for a stupid wolf than food? He wasn’t starving by any means, but there was never a guarantee for another large meal in the near future. Living the past few moons as a loner, this is something that Rikez has learned through trial and error. No meal should be passed up.

Without barely a nod, Rikez walked head and tail held high to the mouth of the white brute’s abode. He swished his jet black tail in the white brute’s face, his message clear: He was in charge here. Just because he was taking the brute’s offer of food did not mean they were not still enemies. The black brute had to pull himself up onto the ledge by his front legs, and with a small grunt, he was able to hoist himself smoothly into the cave. Amber eyes flashed yellow as they granted him the ability to see in the dark. As he adjusted to the dimness, the smell of old kill reached his nose. It was a tart scent, and as Rikez stepped into the back of the shallow cave, he realized why the other brute wouldn’t be eating this. It had clearly begun to rot, and the steady buzz of flies rang in Rikez’s ears. This was crow food.

He stepped back with a snort of disgust. ”I could never be hungry enough to eat this filth.”

He was having a hard time understanding this wolf. He was completely different from all the others. Perhaps he came from somewhere else, maybe off the island? He had heard of wolves not from here, and sometimes the voice would say something about not being a native, and naturally he would brush it off. He roared some more, and seemed to accept his proposal. Walking past in an assertive manner, he headed in the direction that Wynter had said where his whereabouts. Parts of his tail brushing his face. "What's HIS problem?" the old voice screamed. Oh hush, he replied. It WAS a little bothersome, but he figured it was alright. He imagined the wolf to be like a male buffalo, something the old voice once spoke about a certain night. If you were compliant with its interests, (and weren't a complete annoyance), it was, "fun" he said. Now, Wynter didn't know if that was a bad thing, but he figured it was ok to play with fire once in a while. Well, at least he would promise not to make it a habit, even if it was only to make the old voice shut up. He was thinking things in his mind over until he realized that Rikez had covered a bit of space, and sluggishly followed. Hmm, he thought. There were peculiar looking animal tracks in a few small piles of dry mud. As he observed more, he noticed some claw marks in some of the rock on the mouths of the countless caves. This wasn't "his" side of the hills, so he hadn't much knowledge of the inhabitants of this cave, but he was definitely certain it was a predator, with claws much too big to be a wolf's. Rikez hadn't seemed to notice yet, though it didn't surprise him. A wolf of his size wouldn't have to worry about much, so it seemed. Especially a wolf like him, he thought. A few seconds later he picked up the pace a bit. He managed to catch up to the brute ahead of him. He heard him say something about crows, as he realized that they had just entered a cave. He looked around, and noticed that there were many more claw marks inside, and it clicked into his mind. "No! Rikez we have to go right now!" He turned around and surveyed (I don't know why this is coming up as an error, surveyed  is a real word, I even checked some dictionaries/ the internet to be sure) the immediate area, no sign of it so far thank goodness. "This is a cougar's cave!" He whispered with urgency.

Rikez turned away from the half-rotted carcass and saw the white brute standing in the opening of the cave. Rikez wasn’t surprised to see unease flickering across the other wolf’s muzzle and his white, fluffy tail lower to the cave floor. How dare he make me think he had food to share. He should be scared, Rikez thought bitterly as he stepped towards the other brute. His snout wrinkled at the scent of the fly-infested kill and he sneezed, head tossing with the effort of getting the smell out of his nose. Suddenly, the white wolf barked out at Rikez, his bright yellow eyes flashing as the brute widened them in fright. "No! Rikez we have to go right now!" Then his voice dropped to a whisper, as if speaking quieter would keep them safe. ”This is a cougar’s cave!”

Rikez looked around the dim cave, this eyes flashing yellow so he could see even into the darkest corners. He had heard of cougars before, though he had yet to come face to face with one. Seeing the state of the cave, he highly doubted a cougar was going to come strolling in here. There was no scent of big cat, though that could just be because of the stick of the carcass behind him. And that was another thing; no predator would live in a place and leave food to rot. This feline had not been living her for quiet some time. Scoffing, Rikez addressed the ivory brute. ”Don’t get your fur in a knot. There’s no danger here. The cougar is long gone. Just look around.” He nodded his great black head at the rotting flesh behind him and the dark debris that could very well be old scat. ”This is an old cave. If it were occupied, we would know by now.” He felt as if he were informing a nitwit. Even a pup would be able to see the things he pointed out. Were had this wolf been raised where he didn’t know basic tracking and survival skills?

With a few bounding leaps, Rikez brushed past the white wolf and was out of the cave. For a moment, the sudden sunlight dazzled him, and he had to blink a few times before his eyes were adjusted. It was high time he thought about moving on. He had no destination, no end goal, but it definitely wasn’t here with this brute. There was no way in hell he was going to get stuck traveling with him, either. No. This was a journey he would make alone, without anyone to hold him back.

..."Oh". He froze for a second. He then giggled. "Oh, I'm so sorry" he said, smiling. "Those humongous prints must be yours" He made a face and pointed toward the mud puddles behind him. Ugh, of course, something like this happened. It was incredibly funny though, so he supposed it was alright."Ha-ha, sorry about that!" "That wolf was in idiot for trying to go ahead" the voice said."WHY do you have to be so rude?" he retorted. "Well its true, that wolf, no thing, is just a big lug of fur and flesh, no brains whatsoever". "You know because? I did point in that direction so it would make sense to go that way, so it was kind of my fault for not keeping up to guide him". "Well it doesn't matter, I'm over this one, let's just go home, let him find his own place to stay!" "When did you get so mean?" "Well, I think its warranted! If that cougar was here he could have gotten us killed!" "Oh never mind that, stop arguing with me, it makes me look crazy, even if it is only for a few seconds, just bare with me a little more, this wolf might be leaving on his own accord anyway." "Fine! Why are you so interested in that wolf anyway?" "Oh, be quiet!". It seemed to him like the wolf hadn't noticed him fretting with himself yet, but he couldn't be sure. He had to say something else quickly. "Well, it's getting late. I'm uh, heading to my place now, I understand if you wouldn't be obliged to join me." It was hard for him to say that. It hurt him somehow. Maybe that's why he was scared of people. They could hurt him, all of the important ways. Stupid ways.

OOC: Wanted to keep it short and simple cause I want to see what happens next

Rikez huffed, annoyed, and turned back to face the gaping maw of the cave mouth. The white brute still stood in the shaded opening, and he was positively grinning from ear to ear. What in the world…? What could possibly warrant this wolf to be so happy? Rikez flicked one of his black auds in frustration. He simply could not understand this wolf. This dopey, obnoxious, smiling wolf was more likely to get the black brute killed than aid him in finding his next meal.

Grumbling under his breath, Rikez ignored the ivory male as he rambled and giggled on about paw prints. He lifted his black head, peering at the horizon. All he could see was a seemingly endless landscape of green hills, dotted only occasionally with trees. The caves were mostly hidden from view, as they sat in vast majority at the base of the hills, tucked away in the miniature valleys. Glancing upwards and squinting his amber eyes, the black wolf took note of the sun and how the shadow at his feet was leaning greatly in one direction. Evening was settling upon the land, and Rikez felt as if he had wasted an entire afternoon. He would soon travel East to see what lay beyond the hills, and then… well only time will tell what happens to him after that.

"Well, it's getting late. I'm uh, heading to my place now, I understand if you wouldn't be obliged to join me." The ivory brute was peering at Rikez expectantly, his head cocked slightly to once side. Rikez could all but keep from rolling his eyes. Had this punny wolf learned nothing from the way Rikez had treated him in the last few hours of their meeting?

Rikez did hesitate, however. The look in the other wolf’s eyes was almost desperate, and for a moment, Rikez remembered that this wolf was alone too. Unlike Rikez, he was probably not alone by choice. Loneliness was a tricky thing for wolves. For some, it drove them into complete despair. For others, it simply made them mad. But there was nothing the black wolf could do. What good had caring after my siblings done? he thought bitterly. He was not the kind of wolf who fixed helpless things. He was a destroyer. A ruiner. Keeping this wolf as a companion would only hurt him in the long run. Plus, it wouldn’t do Rikez any good. He would rather take his chances hunting alone than having this wolf attempt to hunt alongside him. How do you even stalk prey with a pelt that light?

”I must be going,” he said finally, addressing the white brute. ”Alone.”

He didn’t wait for the other wolf to argue, for he knew that he was more than likely going to try, despite the hatefulness and spite he had thrown at him. He was a good wolf, Rikez could tell. A wolf that would see the good in others even if there wasn’t any there. With a flick of his tail, he turned an ran, like he had done so many times recently. With this last loner, he was not only leaving a white wolf standing there in his wake, but also the grey brute from the forest, the quiet, kind femme from the beach, and his own family from a forest far away. Many wolves stood behind him, watching as he raced away from his problems and towards the unknown.

Notes | Unless you have something to add, I think this thread is pretty much wrapped up. I’m sorry that nothing really exciting happened. Rikez is just not the kind of wolf to stick around.

It was excruciating, for that split second, but he convinced himself that letting this wolf see that would bother the brute further. Right, gotta be considerate he said in his mind. "One day, your going to end up killing someone for a stranger, and then I'm gonna die, so quite with this, tell him to buzz off already!" Ok. We've already established your the coldest thing alive, so can you please be quiet" The wolf was still there, and for some reason, Wynter felt the need to express his approval, though it was already clear the wolf had no need of it. "Um" Ok, take it slow! "See you...Around then". For some reason the smile after that sentence was easy to make. It was probably for the best. The voice would stop nagging him, and the wolf could go about on his own and do as he pleased. He accepted this answer with contempt, because no matter how much logic he put into the situation. It still felt so wrong. In all honesty he wanted to poke the hell out of the Rikez's brains. So many questions, each one way, way to personal then the next. No. He wasn't going to be the one to find these answers, not as this was going so far. A tear was threatening to escape him at any moment, so he abruptly turned his face away, pretending as if he had an itch, but not before it fell, and made the motion pointless. Oops, he cursed himself in his head, hoping the Rikez didn't noticed. The second of silence after, was definitely the hardest part. In his mind, he sort of wished something happened. No, it would be best if nothing happened, that nothing went noticed. He was especially glad that the brute hadn't noticed the gaping cut he received on his leg. Even Wynter himself hadn't noticed until he had attempted to catch up to Rikez. He moved the fresh wound slowly out of site, in case the brute decided to pay extra attention to the wolf as he departed. He decided he would head home and treat the wound the moment he was sure the brute wouldn't turn back.
