He had not been here very long, at least not as long as he could have been, had he never left in the first place. And yet, everything still seemed so familiar. The trees, the grass, the creatures that scurried here and there to their homes or temporary shelters from the summer's heat. It was all so calm and it felt like home. Finally. Still, he had not seen any other members of his father's pack. Did his family still survive here? Were they avoiding him? Did they even know that he survived? He frowned, lowering his head to the ground in front of him as his large paws carried him across the Airila terrain. This place, the forest and territory that he had abandoned so long ago, it seemed to welcome him back with open arms as if he had never disappeared. But what right did he have to call this home? Why should he have been welcomed back into his father's pack?
He killed his mother. Not directly, but he was the reason she was dead. He had stolen her from her family and ended her life. The guilt and pain stabbed at his gut as he picked up his pace, trying to focus on finding some sort of meal instead. He knew that small prey would be simple to pick up here, but with the way he had been trampling about a few moments ago, he knew he would have to move quietly for at least a little while before the forest settled into the silence once more. A soft sigh left his muzzle as his eyes searched around him, trying to pick up any signs of prey that had not yet been alerted of his presence. He was truly hard to miss, though, for with his large size and still bushy coat - even with the summer shedding - made it hard for him to hide himself away in order to hunt.
Eventually, he spotted an unsuspecting squirrel up ahead. It seemed to be eating something, and though they typically took shelter up in the trees for their meals, this one was almost a perfect target for the now-crouching male wolf. He edged forward, careful to avoid stepping on anything that might alert the creature of his presence, but just as he was about to pounce, the bold and obnoxious cawing of a nearby bird sent the red-hued creature scurrying into the safety of the nearest tree. He snarled his frustration at the bird, though it only seemed amused by his plight and called back at him with equal enthusiasm. So, instead of arguing further, he sat down, sighing heavily and turning his head to pull some of the tufts of shedding fur out of his coat around his right shoulder.
