It was early, the sun's rays shining through the mouth of the caverns to shine down on the ebony pup that lay at the opening. Onyx did not sleep with his adoptive siblings anymore, not since he stood up to Lilith. Of course the brutish female hadn't taken things lightly and they had scuffled, but he had gotten his point across. He wasn't afraid to tell her how he felt, and he certainly wasn't afraid to defend himself. His shoulder was still sore from the "fight" but it was going away with each passing day. It was evident that he and Lilith would never be on friendly terms, and he was fine with that. Onyx didn't need her approval and he certainly didn't need her friendship. He didn't need anyone's friendship here. He was an outsider, always would be, and that was okay. All that mattered was that Kairos was his home regardless of whether he was accepted or not. Onyx would do everything in his power to represent Kairos well, and he would sacrifice himself in a heart beat if it meant protecting his new pack. His orange orbs glanced around him, it was early enough that no one else had risen yet and he was perfectly fine with that. Onyx preferred to be on his own anyways and today would be no different. He could see his destination clearly in his mind's eye. He was going to investigate the corral reefs, his hunger leaning towards fish rather than stoats. Onyx had been pushing himself with each passing day to broaden his hunting skills. He knew that in due time he would be heading to the Agoge and would have to fend for himself completely. Today was a day of applying what he had learned so far, and hopefully he would be able to fill his stomach. His large paws dug into the ground as he moved, padding further and further from the caverns. He enjoyed the walk, the sun was shining down on him and the wind was ruffling his fur. He felt oddly at ease and the dark cloud that was his anger and self loathing seemed to be completely absent.
Soon he could see the reefs clearly, the grass changing under his feet and slowly shifting into sand. The ground was moist as well as the air, the promise of rain heavy around him. Onyx didn't mind the rain however, he loved it. It was one of the few things that he actually enjoyed in life. Soon the water was lapping playfully against his paws and he glanced down into the water. He could see all the different colored fish darting beneath the surface and he felt his mouth salivate at the sight of them. His stomach began to grumble loudly, the sound was obnoxious and distracting. He knew that he was hungry, he didn't need to be reminded by the loud noises of his stomach. He sat on his haunches then, watching as they continued to swim beneath the surface. His tail slowly began to wag, his tongue lolling gently from his mouth. Which one.. He muttered to himself, until finally his orbs locked with one of the larger and darker fish. That one. He thought to himself and he crouched lower, watching carefully as he waited for the moment of truth. Then, suddenly, he lurched forward to dunk his muzzle into the water. At first his jaws snapped and caught nothing, but when he tried the second time he felt his teeth latch onto his prey. The fish writhed furiously in his maw and he quickly pulled his muzzle out of the water and back pedaled. He had inhaled salt water in the process and he dropped the fish, coughing and sputtering for a second to clear the water from his lungs. The fish began to flop back in the direction of the water but he was far too quick. A large paw shot out to hold it tightly to the ground and keep it locked in his grasp. When he was finally able to breathe again he let out a short laugh. He couldn't believe that he had actually done it! Onyx wasted no time and lowered himself to the ground, his underbelly immediately getting damp as he laid on the sand. His teeth dug into the flesh of the fish and the taste was amazing. He had never really had fish before and this was exactly what he had been searching for. His tail continued to wag gently as he devoured his catch, proud of himself for succeeding in the hunting portion of his training.
