She’d been reluctant to leave the safety of Ina’mos and, naturally, her young. More and more Messoria had to remind herself that they were old enough to wander the island on their own now, no longer needing her ever-watchful eye or sharp reprimands. They’d swiftly taken it upon themselves to explore in the first days, eager to be free of her side solely due to the tantalizing offer of freedom. She watched from the shadows of the dens each morning as they went tromping off through the forest, a feeling of mingled pride and sadness swelling in her chest. In a mere two months’ time they would be ready to make the swim to Vor’asa for the Agoge, much like the older Kairos Youth were beginning to do. Messoria did not miss the wistfulness upon the mother’s faces when they returned to the dens, fresh from seeing another of their sons (and in some rare cases, daughters) off. It was a strange thing, being a mother; while she was so very delighted to see the young brutes and femmes that they were growing into, she knew that there would come a time when it would be her staring forlornly after their receding forms in the ocean. She’d done well with raising them to be independent and able; she could only watch idly from the sidelines now as their fates unfolded.
And so it was with grim determination that she’d temporarily separated herself from them, and her home. It had been so long since she’d stepped foot upon land that was not Ina’mos; she’d risen from the ocean dripping and tired, content with knowing that although her young no longer needed her to watch over them, they would be well supervised on their homeland. She’d forgotten how very arduous the swim was, but the burn in her muscles was pleasant, a welcome sensation to the femme. Her dark and diminutive form streaked across the Occasus, head held high and proud, amber eyes alert as she approached the nearest source of drinkable water near the ocean, a river she’d passed long ago on her travels. While normally a she-wolf might have spent such a journey glancing furtively over their shoulder for threats, Messoria did no such thing. She was close to Kairos territory, and a Consort of the Emperor as well as second-favored and beloved femme of her mate's harem; should one be foolish enough to harm her, they would pay for it dearly with blood and body.
Finally her dainty paws halted alongside the river. Messoria dipped her head, small pink tongue darting out from between ivory teeth to drink from the cool, clear source. It was a welcome respite from the oppressive heat, which was swiftly drying her wet pelt that had previously cooled her. Panting quietly, she lowered herself to her haunches beside the water, carefully dipping her forepaws into the stream. She could not fully emerge herself and risk being carried away by the current; her paws alone would have to do. Occasionally the silvery body of a fish darted beneath the surface, but she’d sated her hunger before leaving Ina’mos. Perhaps she would take a few back with her to offer her pups; fish were prominent on Ina’mos, but it was no secret that the fish of the ocean and the fish of freshwater were different in both type and taste.
