History: Hailing from a pack of wandering nomads in the Southern territory of Anikira, Phantom had a hectic upbringing. He was born to mother Adena and father Tor, a pair of wolves that couldn’t have been more different. His father was a wild wolf with an unstoppable temper, prone to outbursts, whilst his mother was a soft and gentle female who would have protected her children with her life. Phantom first experiences of the world were Adena’s soft words and Tor’s ferocious snarls.
Phantom’s litter was the first to be born to Adena and Tor. Phantom had one twin brother, Spectre, a pup almost identical to him in appearance but with a more troublesome streak than Phantom. Where Phantom was cautious, Spectre took risks. Where Phantom stayed with his mother, Spectre thought the world of their father. Very few had difficulty telling them apart despite their physical similarities, but most gave them an equally wide berth due to their father, the respected but feared second-in-command.
The pack’s alpha was a fair wolf who’d known Tor since their childhood and had appointed him to be his Beta out of trust, and Tor’s willingness to say what others would not. Phantom often wondered how someone as kind as the alpha could be friends with someone like his father, but in truth Tor was a coward and only picked on those who could not defend themselves against him, and the rest of the pack was unaware of his anger issues.
Phantom’s parents had two more litters which totalled seven more brothers and sisters whom he adored. Tor was a distant parent, choosing to busy himself with his Beta duties than look after his pups. Phantom was more of a father to his younger siblings than their father ever was; he helped raise them with his mother over the three years he remained with the pack, while Spectre followed in their father’s footsteps and rose up the ranks of the pack. Already essentially a father, Phantom never got the opportunity to find a mate of his own.
In the autumn of his third year, Phantom was forced to leave his pack, and his family, for good.
His life as he knew it changed one terrifying evening. Spectre had challenged Tor for his position as second-in-command, and he’d won. Tor’s temper was like nothing any of them had witnessed thus far, and for the first time he turned his anger on the youngest pups. For years, Phantom and his mother had been protecting them from his ire, taking the damage themselves to spare them a life of fear. But tonight, they weren’t enough.
Tor towered over the young ones, violence burning hotly in his sinopia coloured eyes, and when Phantom saw the fear on their faces, something inside of him snapped. Overcome with anger, Phantom lunged for their father. What happened next is unknown to Phantom, when he regained consciousness his family had fled and his father’s blood corpse lay next to him.
Phantom and his father had fought a long battle, neither willing to let the other walk away with his life. It was a fight to the death that Phantom won, and his prize was shame and exile. His family had fled in fear, horrified at what he’d proved himself capable, and Phantom knew the pack would not believe the truth without his family there to verify his story. More importantly, he knew that he was no longer fit to look after anyone but himself after what he’d done.
Phantom left the pack for good then, heading North in search of a new life, or at least an escape from his previous one. The year he spent alone was long and arduous; adapting to life alone had been tough but it made him stronger and even more resilient. He used the time alone to hone his skills not just as a fighter but in stealth and trickery and has believes he has mastered his underlying anger by channelling it into a weapon.
Personality: A puzzle to almost everyone he meets, Phantom’s motives are never clear unless he wants them to be. At his best, he is a protector to the vulnerable, to those who cannot protect themselves. At his worst, Phantom is a weapon – a skilled wolf capable of ruthless violence toward his enemies. These two sides are normally harmonious as he is able to control his ferocity and use it to his advantage when he needs it, but so far he has suffered from one uncontrollable, blinding fit of rage which he inherited from his father and he cannot be sure it won’t happen again.
At first glance, Phantom is a serious and stoic wolf; enigmatic but polite all the same. Phantom is respectful, but expects this same respect back. His reaction to strangers varies depending on how he reads them before they even speak, and anyone who meets him will tell you that his ghostly eyes seem to look into the depths of your soul. Phantom is extremely perceptive, adept at analysing – both wolves and situations – and can be trusted to be a good judge (although he is prone to err on the side of caution).
Phantom’s darker side has been kept strictly controlled ever since the incident with his father. It cannot be denied that there is a shadow over his gentle heart, but it is something he has attempted to hone and sharpen into a weapon to be used against his enemies, making him a deadly assassin. It’s hard to get close to Phantom for this reason. He appears to acquaintances closed off and mysterious, not just for his own good but for the good of others. It is, deep down, a defence mechanism to keep himself from hurting anybody he cares about.
Despite his flaws, Phantom has a heart of gold that he keeps cautiously guarded. Particularly toward pups and those weaker than him, Phantom is protective and concerned – perhaps to a fault. It goes against everything he has learned in life to be so easily influenced by his caring heart, but he finds it difficult to turn down anyone who needs his help.
Overall Phantom is a fearless brute, capable of terrible and ruthless acts, but possesses a compassionate heart and is fundamentally a protector.
