No longer a pup, Silver was enjoying her newfound freedom. The wind in her fur, sunlight in her eyes. Now that she was nearing adulthood, the adolescent could explore without having to sneak away from her overprotective mother, Emerald.
A subtle breeze was streaming past Silver's maw as she tasted the air, bringing scents of abundant prey. The time was ripe to sharpen her hunting skills. Lifting herself to her feet, Silver made her way out of the den that she had made for herself, close enough to her family but far enough to be free from their crushing presence.
When the femme emerged, she discovered that the forest was heavy with moisture and more was coming down from the heavens. Curiously, Silver pawed the mud-strewn ground, pushing it down before it sprang back up again. Autumn was a curious time of year. It was as if the world was dying instead of living. And there would be dying - the dying of Silver's food! Silver smiled a little and tried to remember everything that Emerald had taught her on hunting. This would be the first time that she would attempt to hunt alone, and she did not want to mess up.
Opening her mouth slightly to taste the air again, she followed a peculiar scent. It was watery, wild, and rather harsh on her tongue. The first-time hunter wondered what it was, forgetting to tread lightly and stirring a bird nestled in a tree above. She did not care for birds at the moment, so Silver continued to pad forwards.
Rocks were slick with rainwater and leaves above dripped onto the fae's pelt, in addition to the rain directly from the clouds. The sky was a similar colour to Silver's coat, which was dull and grey with the heaviness of water. Silver's paws carried her forwards still, around towering jungle trees and under prickly brushes, her urge to explore making her ignore the sharp thorns threatening to puncture her skin. On and on she trod until she encountered a reptilian creature with a long, slender body and seemingly no limbs. A word that she had only heard in stories came to mind. Snake.
Curious yet cautious, Silver gently pushed her head forward to get a better view of the creature. The snake's body was primarily an olive colour, with scales that gleamed with water. It reared its head and met Silver's eyes, looking at her with the same curiosity. With the snake's head lifted, the she-wolf could see that the snake had black bars littering the underside of its neck and that the olive colour faded to a salmon pink on its underside. There was black skin sticking out of its neck, which Silver recalled was a 'hood'.
"Hello there. You'll make a tasty snack."
Silver knew that it was foolish to talk, but since the snake already knew of her presence, she decided that it would make no difference.
Her mind made, Silver began edging towards the snake, expecting it to fight back or at least try to escape. But, to her surprise, her prey stayed unmoving. The huntress became suspicious, pausing to see if her food was up to something. The snake stared at Silver still, only moving when she moved. Quaking with fear, the adolescent tried walking up to the snake, but still the snake's gaze met Silver's with gentle curiosity.
"Duarte." The word was quiet and softly spoken, but Silver knew that it was a name. The name of her new companion. There was something alluring about the way Duarte eyed Silver that made her know his sex, his name, and that she just wanted to have him as company. Hi Duarte. My name is Silver."
Notes: This is before Silver joined Ananke; Duarte will be Silver's small animal companion. I will catch up on replies ASAP!
