He missed what he had once had, the things he had almost had. Missed it all on a deep and profound level, something that cut right to the marrow of his bones. He longed to belong again, to see what was left of his family, as little as it was anymore. Solitaire felt cheated of so much, but life was often unfair, and he did not think there was a way back to where he had come from. Not without possible death involved, and Solitaire was too young for that kind of risk. There were possiblities in a new home, a land far, far away from where he had been born. He was still first and foremost a healer, and most packs found them to be of some worth, right? At least this was how he had been raised to believe. Why wouldn't it be so in any other place?
Of course Solitaire knew nothing of this place or the inhabitants, and he supposed that meant there were endless risks and chances to find or be thrust into. Solitaire was trying to be optimistic about the situation, but that did not negate his caution, the general lack of trust for others. He had been through a good share of discourgaging situations in his few years, and much of it weighed heavily upon him now. It showed in the way he moved, the lines and angles of his face, the shadow in his gaze. He could have been capable of so many great things, or so he felt back before all his plans fell apart. They hadn't been big plans, either. Keep up his medical duties to the pack and stay in rank. There hadn't been any higher to go as a healer...
There could have been a litter of pups to dote upon, if only Ambrosia hadn't vanished. Solitaire didn't want to think that she had done it on purpose. The idea that such a kind female would try to tear apart his family like that.. it was unfathomable to him. If he let himself believe she had planned it that way, betrayed them.. maybe Solitaire would never be able to trust another female again. Or anyone else, and what good would that do him? None. He already had enough problems with trust. The thoughts of broken dreams tumbled through his mind as he ambled along, head dipped toward the ground and nose twitching at the scents he was picking up. He was alert, but it was a strange place, and there was no knowing who or what might be out here. Best to be on his toes.
