Akanke hid on the forest's edge. Her mouth dry with thirst. It had been days since she had washed up on this island. She has seen others from afar, but never approached them. She was afraid what would happen if she did. Her green eyes probed her surroundings. The water in front of her looked so appealing, but she knew she was in danger. She was always in danger. She was new to the island therefore she would be the first to be picked on. She just knew insults and hate would be hurled at her as soon as one saw her face. Her stupid, ugly face. She hid between her front legs for a moment. It was quiet, peaceful where no one could see her. She could stay hidden under her front legs forever, but the thirst in her mouth was almost unbearable. She was an idiot for waiting to find water for so long. She could imagine what Father would say. She knew, in his eyes, she was the worst. She didn't ever think anything through and she didn't have any common sense.
Breath now. You are no longer with Father.
She silently spoke to herself. She peeked her green eyes from underneath her paws and still saw no one. After one last sweep of the area she headed toward the water in front of her. It was as if an explosion of everything good was directed at her mouth. The water was so cool and refreshing. It was as if her life was worth living again. She had no idea water could taste so good, but a few days of not drinking will do that. She filled her belly with water. You couldn't see it, but underneath her gray and white winter coat her stomach was bulging with delicious water.
After she had her fill she lifted her head up. The world looked a little brighter. She knew the next thing she needed was food. She had been able to eat some leftovers found yesterday, but she knew in order to have the energy to find a place to call home she needed to find some fresh food. Unfortunately, she was not a hunter and she wasn't worth Father's time so she never learned. She looked around for help, but knew there would be no one. She was udderly and completely alone.
