Ares inhaled his first breath of air on a frigid winter morning, nestled against his mother’s stomach alongside two brothers. The mating of his parents was a sacred one, a ritual borne of both love and blood, for the two were both of ancient bloodlines that had become scarce on the land of Anikira. And so it was that Ares’s mother gave birth to three purebred Dire Wolf pups – three healthy, strong boys who would grow to thrive. From the beginning, it was clear that Ares would be the largest of his siblings, growing to a height that was unusual for Dires, but not unwelcome in the least. He reveled in his size, learning from a young age that he excelled when it came to sparring, often times overtaking his brothers, which swiftly began to contribute to Ares’s growing confidence.
As the months dragged on, so too did Ares’s life. The majority of his time was spent exploring with his brothers, learning from his father, or listening patiently to his mother as she cooed over her eldest son. Her first (and only) litter was her pride and joy, something that she was fond of telling her young. For many moons the small family remain nestled in solitude along the coast of the Occasus, hidden from prying eyes and curious minds.
For some time, this life of normalcy was enough for Ares. He had known nothing else, and while he certainly enjoyed exploring and learning the limits of his powerful body, he had rarely desired for more. And then, on a morning well into his second year of life, everything changed.
He and his brothers had wandered far from their home, intent on crossing the land-bridge to distant lands to explore for a while – and it was as they were halfway across the bridge, so very close to their destination, that disaster struck. A tremor shook the very earth beneath their paws, freezing them in place, and then all was silent. Ares had laughed, amused by the frantic look upon his brothers faces. His teasing jests would be the thing that he remembered much later, for it was the last thing he heard before the volcano upon the Occasus, which had been their home for two years, erupted. The lava had spewed across the land towards them, seeming to move impossibly fast. They’d turned tail and ran, back towards their home, their family, trying to beat the fiery rage of the earth. They’d failed, having to swing wide at the last moment, though Ares’s youngest brother was not swift enough; the fire laid claim to him.
It became swiftly apparent that Ares and his remaining brother would need to seek shelter from the rage that hounded them, though that night they did not sleep. At last they returned to the Occasus late the next evening, only to find that their parents were nowhere in sight, likely having fled at the sign of trouble. For many moons Ares and his brother remained in the area they’d once called home, but their parents never returned. At last Ares grew tired of waiting, realizing that it was hopeless; his brother, however, could not be convinced. At last Ares left him there, though he was not proud of doing so. For some time, Ares wondered, biding his time and gathering information on packs. Over and over, the rumors of one resounded in his head, calling to his sense of righteousness, of confidence, urging him to seek out the Empire that was Kairos. And so eventually Ares turned away from everything that he’d known, plunging into the waters to seek out a much different life.
Even from a young age, it became swiftly apparent that Ares’s sense of confidence was very nearly overwhelming. Doubt is a word that the brute is unfamiliar with, his ego considerably inflated from many days spent listening to the praise of his family. With his confidence comes charm, and there is certainly an abundance of it flowing through the brute’s veins; his words are as smooth and sweet as honey, his way with words bordering upon unnatural. Ares has always been a lustful brute, desiring for things that are just out of his reach. He enjoys the thrill of the chase when it comes to all things – goals, prey, femmes. Should something be described as unattainable to Ares, the brute will do anything in his power to gain what was supposedly never his.
Though Ares is usually easy-going and good-natured, there is a side to him that is ferocious and tenacious. He is hot-headed and quick to anger, which is undoubtedly his largest flaw, shortly followed by his tendencies to maintain stormy relationships. He is extremely possessive of those that he thinks of as his, bordering upon obsessive. Due to his past, Ares has a fear of losing those that he cares for, and would do anything to avoid disaster once more.
