There are gone, Typhon. They are both gone.
A mix of emotions swirled through the young male as he sat, defeated, on the edge of the beach. At first, he had been elated; Goliath and Datura had come to him after the conquest, congratulated him, mentioned that they were proud. Each parent had embraced him, smiled, laughed... And then their faces had turned grave. Typhon had sensed it, some hidden news beneath their parental smiles, but he had been blinded by his own success. He had not thought to ask, not until his mother had turned her head away, then back, the familiar hardness of her expression flooded with sadness. Goliath had simply become a statue, and Ty stood silently, looking for parent to parent as his own face fell.
"What's wrong, mother?" He asked quietly, all joy vanished from his mind as he desperately fought to keep himself composed. Clearly there was something awful coming, something that he was not prepared for. "Please tell me."
Datura took a shuddering breath, one that shook Typhon to his core. "We are leaving," she said without preamble, her voice the same strong tone that it always was, his mother refusing to show any subtlety--it was not her way, and for once, Typhon was glad for it. What she said mattered little; it was important that she was still his mother, unchanged and perfect. "Kairos is thriving, and growing always. Perhaps too much."
Distraught, Typhon began to shake, unable to keep his adrenaline and sadness from manifesting physically. "How... How can it be growing too much?" he asked shakily, his voice cracking as it had not done since he was smaller than Datura. "We are an empire. We have the numbers to protect our land, and the ability. Why shouldn't we continue to expand?"
Datura shook her head and closed her eyes; when she re-opened them to lock onto Ty's, his heart broke, for there was no remorse in her gaze, no chance that she would change her mind. "We miss the closeness we used to share, when your father and I were alone. We wish for that back, and we know everyone will manage fine without us. You have done well, Typhon, and we are leaving Kairos in your hands. Make us proud." She spoke no more, and did nothing except to turn away from him. Goliath followed suit, glancing sadly at his son before he walked away at Datura's side, the two of them plunging into the ocean and swimming away, back to the life they used to lead, across the sea to the continent that seemed so far away.
Typhon watched them silently, without moving, until they disappeared from sight. Though he wished it weren't true, the young male knew deep in his heart that he would never see his parents again. They were moving on, leaving him to lead Kairos with no training, no help; he didn't know how to run a pack, and he had just watched his closest family abandon him on the shore. What was he supposed to do now?
For a long time he sat there, fighting internally while his body sat still where it was, all energy going toward his mental process. There was so much he needed to do; inform the pack, appoint a new matriarch and trusted council, plan his future and the future of Kairos... And yet he could only mourn his loss. The thought of his beautiful and amazing mother living her life away from him filled the young wolf with such despair that he didn't know if he could ever move from where he was now cemented. The loss of his father was an equally deafening blow. Suddenly he was faced with more responsibility than he had ever imagined, atop of the hardest loss he had ever needed to face, or ever would again.
Immobilized, the wolf felt a strange sensation flow through him as the words he heard were repeated. They. Are. Gone. It was his savior, the light in the darkness, and He was blocking out all the noise of the morning; bird song faded, as did the wash of the ocean wave, until Typhon felt entirely unreal, as though he were floating high above himself. Do not let this defeat you. Let it strengthen you, my son. Turn your sadness to determination and become the leader you were born to be.
Numb, Ty shook his head, the motion making his dizzy. "I can't. I can't do it," he said, his voice a monotone. A mental lash came across him then, causing the wolf to jerk backwards as though he had been smacked with an invisible paw. It came again when his body began to slump once more, and he felt anger bubble up within him. "Quit it," he seethed quietly, narrowing his eyes despite there being nothing to see. A third time he was attacked, and this time he shot up onto his paws and snarled wildly, baring his teeth to the gums and flicking his ears back so that they were plastered to the back of his head. "ENOUGH" he roared, and suddenly the bird song that he hadn't been hearing turned to alarm, several creatures flying off and away from the danger that he now was.
Furiously Typhon began to pace, panting and growling and slapping the sand with his giant paws, creating a destructive mess as his sadness converted to angry energy. Let it out, my son. Express your anger so that you can channel it into positive actions. Kairos is in your hands whether you want it or not, and you will not fail your pack mates, flowed the voice, harsh and sharp to cut Typhon to his core. He heard the words but did not acknowledge them, for he was far too busy destroying an invisible enemy to care. You can keep Kairos at the top, and you can build it higher. There are no limits for you. You've already proven yourself by defeating Valyn; now you will show everyone that there is nothing you are not capable of.
"My parents have abandoned me!" Typhon shouted, standing with his legs spread wide and his jaws aimed at the open sky, bright and cheery as though to spite him. "I know NOTHING about running an empire! I am tired, and I am not worthy of any of this!" Though it was anger that kept him going, it was sadness that permeated his words. He was not good enough, he never would be; Goliath had raised Kairos from the ground up, had done so much good for his pack. How was Typhon supposed to live on and carry that legacy?
Goliath would not have left you if he thought you would fail him. Trust in your father's judgement and view this as an opportunity, said the voice, the sound of it echoing in his brain slowly, very slowly eating away at the sadness and anger that filled the young male. It brought questions to his mind, endless questions, and no answers to cancel them out. "What if I do? What if I fail him? And everyone?" Ty asked quietly, his ears falling to the sides of his head and his green eyes shifting from fury to concern. But his body did not slump back down in the sand; he remained standing, his legs wavering only slightly.
You will not. I will not let you, nor will your uncle or your family. Be strong, and you will go far. The words stuck in his mind, became possibilities, and it was moments before Typhon began to believe them. His whole attitude shifted first at a snail's pace, then much more rapidly, until his head and tail were high and his face, while not happy, was determined. "Fine. I will do what I can, and if I fail..." He shook his head then, and growled under his breath. "No. I will not fail. I will lift Kairos higher than before and create my own legacy." Confidence filled him, more than he had felt when challenged Valeria, and he made up his mind.
Kairos would thrive under his rule if it killed him.
