Her heart pounded in her eardrums, a vivid blue blossoming in her mind's eye with every pulse. It came without fail, the blue-burst as familiar to her as the feeling of ground beneath her feet. It was something she didn't think about anymore. It was as natural as the grass, the grey of clouds in the sky, the change of the seasons from fall to winter. She barely noticed the hues of her mind. Her attention was only on the gerenuk that was nibbling on the low vegetation of the plains. The creature was small, probably half the wait of the femme herself, and its flat head was void of the tiny horns that usually adorned the males of this species. She watched with her dual colored eyes—one a brilliant teal, the other a fiery orange—as it bent its elegant neck to tear the leaves from their stalks. It was alone and unawares of the danger. Muse was guaranteed to give it a swift death.
Her limbs tensed just slightly before she pushed off from her hiding place beneath a short tree—one of the few shaded areas of the plains. Ivory paws flashed beneath her, and her breath was hot in the chilly air. If she wasn't moving so quickly, she would have been able to see the small puffs of visible breath trailing behind her. With a bleat of fear that was starburst red in Muse's mind, the gerenuk made to run, its long limbs scrambling in the grass. But it wasn't prepared for the attack. Muse felt its long neck in her throat and closed her jaws like a vice. The creature's cries were cut off as its jugular was severed, and its body moved in one last jerk before it was still. Settling in the grass, she let the animal's slack body drop from her maw.
The broken body of the gerenuk stood out against the lush green background. Red ran into the grass, pooling underneath and giving the illusion that each blade was sprouting from a miniature sea of blood. Muse tilted her head, pausing at the abstract nature of what she was seeing. She always had a tendency to notice these things that others tended to ignore. But the next moment, she let the bloodlust overtake her and she dove into her kill with relish. It was the first kill she had made here, in Aveline, and it was long overdue. Her heart soared to know that she was able to catch food when she needed it. After loosing her parents, she hadn't been sure she would be able to take care of herself. She had proven more resilient than she had first thought.
