Tired from the mess that had developed right before the male's eyes, the aging alpha of Descai dragged his tattered body back into the depths of the dens. Where they had once resided within the daunting mines of Acerbus, a measly crevice now served as their primary shelter. The male was still bitter about his encounter with the beastly Goliath; that much was clear. But there was little that he could do in his current condition, and somehow his daughter managed to offer a solution that was there for both of their benefits. Vorilye was not without reservations. The rumors of the pack his daughters built were not always the best. But he did have her tentative word, along with a guarantee that he was not fully being removed from his seat of authority. The alpha male still had some say in the pack, and until his last dying breath, he was certain his sons would remain loyal to the family.
But that did not stop Vorilye from wondering what would happen when he was gone. It did not escape his notice that his sons were less than thrilled by the merging of the two packs, and the older brute himself was not without skepticism. There was little he could do to squash those fears, but he would have to put on a confident face for his children lest they drift away. Valeria had been right about some things; they were stronger together. The pack did not stand a chance if they could not get past their immediate differences. While the male had intended for Pharaoh to take over the pack, it was far too soon for him to rise to power. He was an old soul, but Vorilye could not bear to thrust that burden on him. The pressure had destroyed Ryker in his attempts to make the old brute proud, and the pack had crumbled beneath their very paws.
Where there seemed to be no good solution, Valeria had arrived. Not only did they share a mutual goal and a common enemy, but his eldest daughter had something that the others did not: experience. Where they would struggle to grasp the daily tasks that were leading the pack, Valeria already knew what this would entail. But she had a long road ahead of her, and the Mackenzie Valley brute would not be able to do everything for her. The pack might have been under her control, but it would be her effort and her ability as a leader that would determine if the hybrid pack would rise or fall.
