It was a colder day than most Liadan had experienced – frigid and bitter, but not entirely unpleasant. The sky was blinding white and bleak, not a patch of blue in sight, as though the clouds were brimming with something unseen. The growing pup navigated her way to the beach on a whim; a sudden desire to go as far as she could go before the ocean broke her stride. Although she had not yet visited every inch of the island, she knew her way around It relatively well by now. It seemed like a lifetime ago that she took her first steps out of the caverns and into the sunlight, and yet she felt she had barely grown in that time. There was such a long way to go before she was an adult. Patience was not a trait she possessed; she urged the days to pass quicker and make her stronger.
Liadan was surprised by how cool the sand beneath her paws was. The first time she’d journeyed the beach, the grains had been warm to the touch. The beach shifted around her weight as she walked, every now and then she would slide just slightly in the direction of the ocean. The terrain always took some getting used to, especially for one with such a clumsy nature.
Undeterred by her inelegance, Liadan walked and walked, southbound, her eyes fixed on the horizon, an unchanging absolute. On the other side of the island, on a clear day you could see the mainland of Anikira, a place that she had only ever heard about in vague terms. She knew that it was bigger, much bigger than Ina’mos was, and wondered if she’d ever get to see it. There was little reason to leave, other than just for the fun of it, given her entire family lived on the island. Although she enjoyed her own company, at least more than the company of her brothers, Liadan felt no desire to leave them. Kairos was her home, and she was proud of it.
The weather took a strange turn just then. As she finished her thought, decisive and sharp, a small, sudden flake of bitterly cold white felt on her nose. She stopped in her tracks, transfixed and staring at it as it melted away into nothing. Another landed on her back, and then one in her eye. Blinking it away, she turned her gaze to look at the sky. Hundreds of tiny flakes had begun to fall from the enormous white clouds as though the sky had burst. “Huh,” she said aloud, to nobody but herself. The cold flakes sent a shiver down her spine, so she decided to keep walking, though her attention remained transfixed on the flurry of white descending from the heavens. “What the hell are you?”
After what seemed like an age, the jagged outline of Ina’mos appeared in the distance, though Liadan was far too preoccupied to notice the land mass. Instead, she darted her tongue out to catch one of the flecks of snow. It melted into icy cold water the second it made contact, and Liadan screwed her face up in disappointment. “You’re just water,” she continued. “Weird, cold cloud water.”
Then the wind changed, and suddenly Liadan was aware of her father’s presence.
