Whatever Sabaoth had expected to find, it had not been this.
On the very border of Acerbus he stood, gazing down at the femme who had somehow made his job easier by making her way to the edge of Kairos territory in his absence. Perhaps she’d come to find him; perhaps it was a fluke. Regardless, she was in no fit state to tell Sabaoth why she was so very near to Acerbus. If he’d thought she might have gotten better since he’d last seen her, he’d been wrong; it seemed as if she’d eaten enough to live, to nourish the lives inside of her significantly swollen belly, but no more. She was dirty and mute, her eyes unfocused, and Sabaoth’s stomach rolled with revulsion at the sight of her. It was hard to believe that he’d taken one such as her; even now he could not quite recall why he’d bothered, aside from the rushing of his blood in his veins as a result of Kairos’s victory…and simply because he could. Now, however, the reason did not sit as well with the General as it once had.
What was done was done, though, proven by her bulging stomach. He’d seen Roka when she was pregnant, her own belly seeming proportionally huge with the oversized pups that grew within her, and so he knew the size of the white she-wolf was not unusual. But still, something about her seemed…tense. She was uncomfortable, clearly, and restless – both symptoms of a mother who was close to giving birth. But she was early, if that was the case; perhaps something was wrong with the pups. It would not have surprised him with the state that their mother was in.
”Whether they are nearing the origins of life or death, I cannot leave you here,” he mused to himself, knowing that she would not answer. Back and forth he paced, staring down at the blank-eyed mess before him. Before she’d had a fraction of fight left in her, but now…now he doubted he would even have to exert himself dragging her back to Ina’mos. And that was what had to be done, really; he knew that there was a possibility Roka would be furious with him, but he could not leave the femme whose name he had never learned when she might possibly give birth to his own children. And so it was that Sabaoth nudged her to her feet, finding that there was no resistance left in her as she trailed along behind him. He would undoubtedly have to shoulder her weight when it came time to swim, but until then, it seemed as if his journey would not be any harder than it needed to.
