Changes have become too severe in Anikira, and the wolves have been temporarily relocated to the Anikiran Southern Isles. Things have grown dire and unlivable on the mainland; it was time for outside intervention. Please be sure to review the full update on the staff board for more information!
The current season is fall in the Southern Isles. Due to their proximity to the equator, the region is still warm. There is currently no breeding and no birthing amongst the wolves
[attr="class","pltxt"]Ever since the magical evening that she’d spent with Rikez, Calantha had been waiting with baited breath for…something. The fact of the matter was that the femme did not know what she was looking for in terms of her own body, though she knew enough to suspect when she began to change. She had heard about the common symptoms of femme’s who were carrying pups, and would have easily been able to identify them in anyone who was not herself. But as it was, it felt as if it was a stretch to get her hopes up. Though she’d reassured Rikez so certainty that they would be able to have a family, she’d found herself plagued by worried; what if she’d been wrong? What if something was wrong with her? What if she was only exaggerating the telltale symptoms that she experienced?
It had started more swiftly than she’d expected it to. Her appetite had first lessened, and then inevitably increased, which Calantha had reluctantly chocked up to the change in weather. More tellingly was the fatigue, though still she’d been hesitant to allow hope to swell in her heart. But then the weight gain had begun, her hips widening just slightly, her stomach beginning to bulge until it was no longer deniable. And then Calantha had practically burst with joy, her eyes alight with a new kind of happiness as she’d set to work figuring out where she would give birth, ultimately deciding upon the underground tunnels where fresh water would be near, but where she could still have her pups in a separate part of the cavern, far enough away that there was no risk of drowning.
Her symptoms had come on so swiftly that she’d been surprised. Even now her belly seemed larger than she’d expected, though she supposed it was bound to be when Rikez was so much larger than she. And already she loved them, even though she didn’t know how many pups she carried. The excitement seemed to grow just as steadily as her belly did.
The winter air was crisp and cool as she made her way through the forest, a light blanket of snow beneath her paws. Though the trees had lost their leaves, it was still beautiful to see everything covered in a layer of bright ivory. Her pace was slow, her stomach bulging noticeably as she moved, saffron eyes tracking the progress of two sparrows as they swooped and chattered overhead. After several moments she stopped, feeling the familiar ache in her bones as she slowly lowered her rump to the ground at the base of one of the tree trunks, bushy tail fanning out behind her. Everything seemed right suddenly, perfect, as if the very planets had aligned the moment her body had changed with the promise of life. As she gazed towards the clouds, a serene smile settled upon Calantha’s muzzle. Soon, she would be a mother, and alongside Rikez she would raise their pups, watching each day as they grew and flourished.
The sky was rarely anything but a solid grey expanse, blanketing the earth in a bleak layer of dinge and shadow. It was absolute, and it seemed to never let up. There were moments as they days passed where Rikez was allowed the rare chance at a sliver of sunlight. It always came like a small blessing, warm but deceiving before it disappeared once more. But beneath those skies, everything was changing.
It was as if he was afraid to hope for it, but slowly but surely, the large male began to sense changes in his mate. He was acute to her, no wanting to miss a single moment of this transformation. Calantha. She was already so beautiful, but lately, her coat had seemed positively radiant. He felt drawn to her side, and often left patrolling just to see where she was in the territory. He wanted to know where she was at all times, to protect her, and see her changing. Before long, he was aiding in her hunting. She was eating as much as him, a brute nearly twice her size! She never ceased to amaze him, even as her stomach grew rounder and her demeanor changed.
His dark paws moved swiftly over the hard-packed snow that coated the forest floor. It was thicker in some places, and icy in others, but the brute had lived in this climate and this terrain his entire life, even if it had been a different wood. He knew she would be close… and she was. Sitting elegantly at the base of a large oak. Its roots protruded from the thin layer of snow like sea serpents rising from the depths, and the ivory dusting around her brought out the tans and gold of her pelt. Her stomach was bursting with new life, and again, Rikez had to pause in wonder at the act they had done together.
His past had been tainted by a broken family. A tyrant father and meek mother raised he and his siblings in a twisted fashion. He had never imagined that family could be this beautiful.
Suddenly embarrassed, the black brute moved slowly towards her and touched his muzzle to her cheek. ”How are you, my love? he asked, using a rare nickname for his mate. Even now, the word love was slightly foreign on his tongue, but for her, he would have said anything.

[attr="class","pltxt"]The sound of someone approaching drew Calantha from her peaceful reverie, her gold-tinted eyes flickering with curiosity as she glanced towards the distant trees. A moment later a dark shape slipped into view, and her gaze softened, her muzzle stretching into a smile. Of course it was Rikez. He had been so very attentive since it had become obvious she was pregnant – even more so than usual, though Calantha was certainly not complaining. His presence and care eased the worries she often had about her first pregnancy, making her feel secure, as if anything was possible as long as he was there beside her.
He came towards her, brushing against her cheek, and Calantha smiled as she leaned into him. ”I’m well enough,” she informed him, pausing long enough to groom a stubborn patch of fur behind one of his ears that bristled. Once it was smoothed down to her satisfaction, she continued. ”Tired, though. My muscles never stop aching, and I swear if my appetite gets any larger, I’ll become so fat that you’ll have to roll me around.” She shook her head, her expression one of mock-tragedy as she smiled. It was difficult, her pregnancy, and something entirely unexpected…but Calantha found that she was loving every step of it. ”It’s exciting, though,” she told him softly. ”Even the aches and the hunger. It just reminds me that they’re there, growing, and that we’ll meet them soon.” Still she was surprised by how swiftly her belly had grown massive, and it was something that both worried and excited her. It was clear that they were growing within her, healthy and strong, but she was so very small. She only hoped that her birth would go smoothly.
She did not bother to voice these worries to Rikez, however. It was something that only time would tell, and in this moment, she wished to share her joy with him. Shifting her weight to sit more comfortably, she glanced towards him considerately. ”I wonder how many there will be. And if there will be girls, or boys…it’s practically all I think about.” The happiness and excitement was clear upon her features as she spoke. ”I’m so glad that we’ll have a family, all our own. They’re going to be hopelessly spoiled though. And you…you’ll be such an amazing father, Rikez. I can already see it.” And she could. He would love them just as much as she would; there was never a moment where Calantha doubted that.

He wrinkled his nose as her tongue teased that one spot of fur that was always sticking up behind his ear, but he bent slightly anyway to give her better access to the stubborn spot of his pelt. She was always helping him realize things—subtle things—like how that unruly patch of fur never truly lays flat. It was one of the many things that showed just how much she cared. As she talked, he ran his muzzle over her shoulders and back, gently, for he knew the weight of her belly sometimes pulled on her vertebra, putting extra pressure in her spine. She was both parts nervousness and excitement, a mirror of his own warring emotions. What they were about to do was a journey neither had tried before. In fact, the black brute was unsure if any wolf on Anikira had a mate as small as Calantha.
Her words made his heart swell. ”I hope we have a boy, he told her, as ferocious as you are, and with the same pure heart. Someone who I can show the ways of a warrior. His tail thumped as he wagged it once. He had never seen combat, but defending Airila and his new family was something that Rikez was ready to teach to his offspring. He had never forgotten the cougar he has faced his first few weeks on the island, and although his old pack had taught him barely anything he could use here, fighting was something that had always been ingrained in him. Without that training, Rikez could have lost his life before discovering the safety of Airila.
”You’ll be such an amazing father, Rikez. I can already see it.
Those words sent a warmness through the black brute’s body that thoroughly defrosted the last coldness he held in his heart. His own father had been a hellish brute, cruel and unrelenting in his teachings of “eat or be eaten,” forcing Rikez and his siblings to fight against each other until they drew blood. The hate and resentment his old pack had been built on seemed so foreign now, and yet… fathering his own pups scared him. If he was even a little bit of what his father was, he would hurt everything he had grown to love.
In one sentence, she has quenched my fears.
”You don’t know how much that means to me,” he said in a whisper, deep set amber eyes closing as he pressed against her and inhaled her sweet scent, now with the slight undertone of milk and life just beneath her pelt. ”I am so glad that you’re mine, and that you have chosen me to be yours.”

This untraditional coupling is one of the truly loving matches in Anikira. Although they are members of two different species, Calantha and Rikez have overcome the differences and rose above, finding love in the most pure of ways. And from this pairing, a litter born of two loving parents was conceived. These little boys and girls will have the great honor of being raised by two parents that support each other, while many of the offspring in Anikira have not had such a benefit. The pair are truly fitting of one another; both kind-hearted and generally good individuals.
