History: His first year was like that of any other except for the humans that owned him. He was taken in as a puppy after his parents were killed in a hunting accident. He was the only pup his owner could find so rather or not he actually has, or had, siblings is unknown to him. Though, if there were more pups, the likelihood of them surviving on their own at such a young age is slim. When his owners saw the prominent marking upon his back, they were quick to name his Ace of Spades, or Ace for short. He was a playful puppy and got along well with the wolves that lived in the woods behind his owner’s house. However, despite their warnings, they could never get him to leave his human’s side.
Once he got to be a year old, his owner began to train him, much like if he was a hunting dog and not a wolf. He was trained to track and follow scents, to go after kills once they were brought down by the bullet and was occasionally allowed to hunt and kill on his own. Once he began to get too big to keep in the house, his owner took to chaining him in the yard. Though Ace missed the comfort that was living indoors, he didn’t think much about being outdoors and quickly found that he could dig under the house and use that space as a den of sorts.
His second year of life was spent the much the same as the first year. He continued to learn and excel at the ways of hunting with his master and enjoyed the treats that came after every successful hunt. It wasn’t until he was about two and a half that everything changed. He had gone out to get a deer that his master had brought down when all of a sudden, a very loud explosion happened behind him. Because of the intense volume of the explosion, Ace lost his hearing but because he was far enough away, he kept his life. But, he knew his master had been killed and though he hated to do it, he had to move on. He ate his fill of the deer and with one glance over his shoulder, he started his new life as a loner.
The next year was spent settling, unable to find any spot that seemed good enough to settle down at. The fact he had lost his hearing made life incredibly difficult as he had to relearn how to do everything. Because he could never hear when someone was approaching, he became very jumpy and defensive. He tried to avoid others at all cost, hating the fact he couldn’t hear what they were saying. Even after he started to learn to read lips, it made him uncomfortable to be around others.
Finally, his travels brought him to the ocean and, though he didn’t know where he would end up, he started to swim. After a long while, he was beginning to think he had made a huge mistake but, it was then that he saw land in the distance and he continued to swim. Once he reached the spot he had seen, he feebly crawled onto shore and collapsed. A loss of hearing and a brand new life weren’t exactly the most exciting of things but he knew he had to make the best of his situation.
Personality: Ace’s speech is the first thing anyone would notice about him. Because he lost his hearing after he learned to speak, he still has the ability to talk. However, because he can’t hear himself talk, he has a very unique and odd accent. One could say his voice sounds a bit rough, almost forced, even though he can speak fluently. Also, because he can’t himself, he is often times too loud or too quiet. There are even times when he’ll think he’s talking but there is nothing but dead silence coming out. One should be patient when in a conversation with him.
The fact that Ace is very defensive is another trait that is very noticeable. Because he can’t hear when someone or something is coming up on him, he startles every time someone comes up unless he sees them coming. He is quick to turn and snap in defense when someone comes up from behind him but more often than not, it is an act of defense and not an act of aggression. He does not like conflict and will always chose flight over fight. Arguments are another thing he doesn’t do.
Most would say that Ace is anti-social because of the fact that he most often chooses to stay away from everyone. However, this is because of the fact he doesn’t like others to know he is deaf and he doesn’t like having to read lips unless he has to. He especially hates groups because it is extremely difficult for him to read more than one set of lips at a time. However, once he warms up to you, he is quite playful and will enjoy your company. It just takes a little time and patience for him to get to that point.
Ace longs to find a pack, a mate, and to start a family of his own. However, as a deaf wolf, he understands the difficulty of making any of these things happen. He doesn’t think a pack would ever want him because of his disability. Hunting is hard for him because he can’t hear when prey is near nor can he hear how loud he is walking. He also could never be a warrior since he avoids fights at all costs. Because of those reasons, he strongly thinks he will forever be a loner. He also knows the likelihood of someone finding a wolf who can’t hear attractive is slim to none so he doesn’t believe he’ll ever be able to find a mate or start a family.
