contains mentioning of birth; not very graphic

[attr="class","pltxt"]It was time, and Harlot was terrified.
She’d been lounging alongside the water when she’d felt it, not far from the dens where she’d decided to give birth. The pain in her hips had started gently at first, before migrating to her bulging belly, making her wince and gasp with each contraction. And yet stubbornly she’d remained rooted to the spot, determined that she could will away her labor if only she stared at the waves for long enough. But it had now become perfectly clear that nothing she could do would stop the pups from coming, and her head jerked backwards, a whine slipping from her maw as the pain hit her mid-way through her attempt to stand. When it faded she moved as briskly as her round body would allow towards the caverns, throwing her head back to howl for Arche. He was always near lately, and while she’d briefly considered simply suffering in silence, she found in that moment that she wanted him there with her. For months since their mating she’d been conflicted, and she still was…but she knew that she could not go through this by herself. Not with fear pounding through her veins and the pain between her hips intensifying with each step.
Into the caverns she went, padding to the very back, where she half-curled, half-collapsed against the cavern wall. Soon she would have to push, and the very thought made a fresh wave of panic wash over her, her head shaking back and forth slightly. ”No,” she growled at herself, tucking her tail tightly against herself. But it was useless. The pain kept intensifying, the contractions coming closer and closer together as her whimpers echoed around her in the cavern.
The sound of someone approaching had sapphire orbs flashing upwards sharply, a snarl pulling at her muzzle until the shape and smell of Arche reached her, and then her expression was crumbling, her eyes squeezing shut as she fell back against the floor of the dens, sides heaving. The pressure was too intense – she needed to push, but she simply clenched her teeth and shook her head, letting her gaze flicker back towards Arche. ”I’m scared,” she hissed, and though she hated to sound weak, she could not help the way her voice trembled just slightly on the last word.
At last she could fight off her treacherous body no more, and Harlot succumbed to the urges of her body, pushing with all of her might. She didn’t want this, she thought suddenly, but she could not bring herself to say it with Harche hovering so close, his jade orbs seeming to glisten in the darkness of the cavern. And when at last the first pup made its way into the world, Harlot instinctively found herself lifting partially from the cavern floor to lick it clean, her instincts seemingly stronger than her panic. It was a tiny female, her coat a mixture of browns and reds and creams, and as Harlot lifted her to place her alongside her belly, she glanced towards Arche. ”A girl.”
And though she did not allow it to show on her features, she was disappointed. She’d felt distant from the growing life forms within her for her entire pregnancy, and yet she’d hoped that she would love them when she saw them. But there was no rush of affection as she looked down at the tiny squirming femme, no fathomless burst of love. And already she was mentally exhausted, but her body would not let her rest, insisting that she continue.
The second was more difficult for her body to birth, and it swiftly became apparent once the pup had at last made its way into the world – with much whimpering and straining on Harlot’s part – that it was because it was significantly larger than the first. Once more she cleaned the pup, briefly rolling over the squalling body to reveal the gender to both herself and Arche: a boy. She moved him alongside his sister, and Harlot was allowed a brief moment of rest before the contractions started again.
Another female followed, as she declared when she bent to clean the small pup. She was larger than her sister, just slightly, and by far the noisiest of all the pups, squalling loudly as Harlot moved her beside her siblings. And just when she began to pray that she was finished, she set to work delivering the final pup – and the most difficult. For some time she labored, breathing hard and clawing idly at the floor of the cavern as she pushed, the pain obvious in the tenseness of her frame. But then suddenly the pup was born, larger than each she’d birthed already, and wearily Harlot bent to clean him before plopping him gently beside his suckling siblings.
At last, it was done. Her gaze lifted to meet Arche’s, her sapphire orbs shining with exhaustion as her voice echoed quietly in the caverns, raspy and hoarse. ”Two girls, and two boys. All perfect.” And while she did not feel a rush of love, she did feel pride for what she had accomplished; each of her pups were healthy, each strong and thriving already. And even Harlot had to admit that they were beautiful.
