History:
Lynker is the result of a strange combination. His father, Masauchi, was a huge thick-furred brute with big green eyes and snow white fur. He was not handsome, but he was strong, and alpha of the notorious Ramaar pack.
His mother, Suilla, on the other hand, was a gentle, shy, mysterious female with a pale brown pelt and pale brown eyes. There was nothing distinguishing about her, except the fact that she was the leader of a small religious band of wolves who called themselves the Shem’ri. They wandered the land like gypsies, and enlightened the wolves they met on their travels, teaching them how to worship the goddess Shem.
One evening, the Shem’ri crossed into Ramaar territory. They were greeted with hostility and distrust, by a patrol group larger than the whole pack of Shem’ri, and were brought before the lord alpha.
Masauchi fell in love with Suilla the moment he set his eyes upon her. He tried to persuade her to join the mighty pack of Ramaar, but she refused, insisting that the Shem’ri were wanderers and would soon tire of being confined to a single piece of territory, no matter how big it was. But Masauchi wanted Suilla as his alphess, and when the Shem’ri tried to escape, he followed them and took her as his mate, proclaiming the two packs to be one.
At first, the Shem’ri were treated like slaves, but gradually they became part of everyday Ramaar life. Suilla finally settled down, but she wasn’t happy, believing herself to be a trophy like all the alpha’s other mates, even though Masauchi really did love her.
In the autumn of 2008, Suilla gave birth to three adorable pups. Lynker, the runt of the litter, was believed to be stillborn, but after several minutes of immobility, he somehow awoke and made his way to the warmth of his mother. The Shamans of Ramaar said that it was magic; that the pup had died and been brought back to life by the mother-spirit, Shem, as thanks to her devoted servant. The pup’s pelt was said to have been stained black by the spirit’s magic, and as a very unusual colour for an arctic, the tale was almost believable.
However, Suilla didn’t really appreciate the gift, as it meant she had another hungry mouth to feed. It was too much responsibility for the already-stressed wolf, and shortly after the pups were born, she ran away, never to be seen again.
Masauchi was devastated. He gave his three children to Amadelia, a Shem’ri wolf who had produced only one live pup in her litter. Ama was a kind mother and looked after the pups well for their first few weeks.
But she too was restless. She was still a strong believer in the Shem’ri religion, and as such, didn’t like spending long amounts of time in one place. She also disliked the harsh teaching methods of the Ramaar, and didn’t approve of the hierarchy. There was no such thing as a Subordinate or an Omega; if you weren’t of use to the pack, you were killed. As a Hunter, she was treated like a slave, whilst the higher-ranked wolves, like the Alphas and Shamans, were treated like gods. Ama’s loyalties lay only with Shem and her followers, and many fights had occurred because of this.
Still, Ama wasn’t heartless enough to leave pups that had already been abandoned once. She kept looking after the four pups until they were old enough to walk. Then she took them with her.
Unfortunately, Ramaar wolves didn’t like it when their members ditched them. Amadelia and the pups were hunted to exhaustion, even though they had been chased miles away from Ramaar territory.
It didn’t help their situation when one day, Ama injured her leg and therefore couldn’t hunt. She was confined to the small hollow that they had chosen as a resting place. Every day they prayed to Shem, and miraculously managed to survive.
Once, when the three-month-old pups were out foraging for food, they came across a strange cave. The scent of bear was strong around the entrance, but there was something else too. A caribou carcass lay just inside the mouth of the cave; the smell of fresh meat wafted out teasingly. The pups were hungry, but they had been taught that bears loved eating wolf for supper and wouldn’t hesitate to kill a pup if it wandered into their path. So the pups decided that they should go back to Amadelia and forget about the delicious-smelling caribou.
However, as the runt, Lynker was not getting as much food as the rest of them. He was incredibly skinny and on the cusp of starvation. The smell of still warm meat was irresistible, and he was so hungry that he didn’t care if he died trying to get it.
So Lynker slipped away from his littermates. They didn’t even notice that he was gone, until they heard the growls.
The pups didn’t want to leave their brother but knew they had to run away before the mother bear smelt them too. They left him for dead.
But Lynker wasn’t dead. How he survived the encounter was a mystery to him; after all, he was half-starved at the time and the angry mother had two young cubs. But survive it he did.
The mother bear took pity on the starving pup and, that night, he had a huge feast and fell asleep to the rhythm of the sleeping bears’ breaths, content.
The bear had only intended to let the wolf cub stay until he had regained his strength, but Lynker soon became part of the family. His new “littermates”, Darkest Night and Cursed Moon, were so young that they didn’t see the strange pup as a threat to them; Blazing Star seemed relaxed around the wolf, so there was no reason why her cubs should feel any different. The days passed by as he learned the ways of his new family, hunted with them, fished with them, and rolled about play-fighting in the meadows beneath their cave. Amadelia hadn’t told Lynker that he was not her son, so he grew up unaware that he had been adopted not just once, but twice.
Eventually, the time came when the cubs were ready to leave home. Dark chose to stay with her mother, but Curse and Lynker set off together to explore the world. They wandered the lands for many months, until they reached the seaside.
Here, they met a wolf who called himself Salamanca. At first Sal was peaceful enough, greeting Lynker with a cheery grin and a polite nod. But then Curse ambled out of the bushes and Sal changed completely.
He growled aggressively and bared his teeth at the young bear, warning him to get away from his freshly-killed prey. Of course, Curse didn’t really understand what was happening so he stayed where he was. The lone wolf took this as a challenge and rushed forwards to attack the cub.
Lynker saved the bear’s life, by diving in front of his friend and making Sal hesitate long enough for the pair to turn tail and flee.
But the angry wolf wouldn’t give up so easily. He chased Lynker and Curse down to the shore, and forced them into the shallows. Then he began a calculated attack, dodging in to snap at Curse, then skittering backwards before the bear could land a blow of his own. Lynker could see that his friend was tiring quickly and losing a lot of blood. He knew that he couldn’t watch Curse die right in front of him, and he had to get them out of the mess they were in. He lunged forwards, engaging in a fight with the older and more powerful brute.
Lynker soon realised that he wasn’t strong enough to take Sal on by himself, and Curse was barely able to stand on his injured legs. He delivered one last blow, then fled into the waves and pushed the bear ahead of him and out into the vast blue ocean.
How they survived the long swim was a mystery, like many other things in Lynker’s life. When he finally spotted land in the distance, he repetitively thanked his "guardian", Shem, and now always leaves a small portion of his meal as an offering to the almighty goddess.
But by the time they washed up on the shore of Anikira, Curse was nearly dead. Lynker cared for his adopted brother, bringing him fresh food each day even though he had injuries of his own to attend to. Unfortunately, Lynker had almost no knowledge of herbs and medicines, so the healing process was agonisingly slow.
They did heal eventually, but the scars from the encounter will be with them for the rest of their lives. During those tough times, Lynker and Curse grew so close that they could almost be mistaken for conjoined twins. However, the pair have realised the dangers of being seen together and have devised many strategies to prevent that situation from happening again.
Personality:
To say that Lynker was normal would be a downright lie. With a coat darker than the night sky, he was destined to be different right from the start. If Ama hadn’t taken him away with her when she left Ramaar, he probably wouldn’t have survived. The Shamans had already started to spread rumours about the dark-coated arctic and it was almost impossible for him to hunt in the pure white snow.
Lynker uses his front paws quite regularly, and often uses his claws to fight. He has learnt the behaviour of scratching trees to mark territory, and this has made his claws very sharp. His leg muscles are also incredibly powerful, after having often used them to stand up on his hind legs. He often adopts the bears' tactics of fighting, but when his opponent is larger than him he mostly relies on his agility.
Lynker loves fishing. He sits patiently in the river, not caring about his sodden pelt, and waits for an unwary fish to swim past. This can take a long time, but Curse is always there with him and the two can chat about a single topic for hours.
Curse and Lynker enjoy "what if?" questions, and love plotting and planning out strategies.
Lynker is not used to wolven company and has developed a sort of wariness of them. He does, however, want to join a pack to see what it is like and is interested in the lives of other wolves, which is quite ironic considering his opinion of them.
He prefers to watch from a distance but is definitely not afraid of physical conflict. He would to anything to protect Curse, and he knows that Curse would do the same for him.
