Opheilia winced as she trudged back through the heavy snow. She had really begun to regret coming to this pack in the first place, but she had managed. She was a Hunter, and the Beta had told her to meet with the two hunters of the pack, Cherie and Dimitri. She hoped that she wouldn't make a fool of herself and make the Beta really regret letting her join. She wanted to prove that she could hunt. If she could choose, she'd wait until the harsh weather ended, or at the very least lightened, and then hunt. But she didn't want to disobey Huxleyi.
She looked around as she waited. There wasn't much to see, especially since the snow was making it hard to see anything at all. But Opheilia swore she saw something move. Then she saw fur. It easily blended in with the sow, but something was definitely there. It was far too small to be another wolf. Was it something she could catch? She stepped towards it, but it didn't move. It certainly was an animal, though. Near white-out conditions weren't even letting it see or sense anything behind it. She smiled. This would be an easy catch, unless it decided to move. She crouched down, inspecting it. She had to squint to see through the heavy snow. After a moment, she realized that it was probably some sort of rabbit or hare. If I can catch this, the she-wolf thought, I might be able to prove myself to Huxleyi and the two hunters I'm supposed to meet.
Then she jumped.
It was like a shot in the dark. She had no clue what she'd land on, if she would land on it or fly clear over it. When she landed, she looked down. Nothing. She turned around to see snow being kicked up as the creature hopped away. She followed, blindly running through the snow. The only thing that made her feel sure that she was still chasing it was the snow that was being kicked in her face. After a few moments of silent chase, the creature hopped underneath some thick trees. She could see it a bit better now, and thought that she'd actually be able to catch it. She made a wide turn and slowly stalked around the patch of trees, waiting for the right moment. After about a minute, she found the perfect angle that would catch it off guard. Behind it.
She'd be able to land on its behind and work from there. She crept silently to the perfect area where she was almost positive it wouldn't see her. She took a few steps back. To really catch it off guard, she'd have to make a leap. She stopped about seven feet from the creature. She took a breath, then leaped again.
She felt a few cracks as she landed. Success.
Opheilia looked down to see a hare crumpled underneath her paws. It looked quite defenseless, but not dead. She pressed down on the animals fur until she heard a satisfying snap. She had broken its neck. She had caught it. She smiled triumphantly.
She had done it.
