Toiro sat tensely by the edge of the pool in Lerelm, staring mindlessly into the deep blue depths. His heart was beating an unsteady jittery rhythm; no matter how many times he came down here, no matter how irrational he knew his fear to be, the large alpha couldn’t help but be frightened by the thought of all that water in front of him. To be sure, the aquifer was a brilliant source of fresh water for the wolves of Airila, and to his knowledge nobody had died here yet, but he couldn’t help the paranoia eating at his thoughts. He was almost convinced that it was only a matter of time before someone fell in and drowned.
Suddenly a dreadfully cold shiver raced down the male’s spine as he imagined his beautiful pups wandering down into these caves and accidentally slipping into the icy water. If no one was around to hear their frantic cries, they would stand close to no chance of climbing out by themselves at such a young age, and would be slowly drawn down into the bottomless depths of Lerelm, to be buried there for eternity…
It was too much; the grey male squeezed his eyes shut and turned away with a distressed whine, unable to bear the thoughts tormenting his mind. He didn’t know why he’d even come down here in the first place – he was pretty sure he’d been trying to conquer his fear, but there was no way that was going to happen when all he could think about were the frightening images of those closest to him drowning, brought on by all the bad experiences he’d had with water. Indeed, it seemed that the god of water had had a personal vendetta against him since he was born, and even though Toiro could usually manage to push away his fear when he was with his packmates, he was still deathly afraid of the past repeating itself.
At this moment he was exceedingly grateful that Aludra had decided to make her birthing den down in the Issimor caverns rather than at the main den site – at least by the sea, she would be warned of an oncoming storm and could evacuate from the caves, but up here in the mountains it would be easy for a small adventurous puppy to get lost in the dark twisting passages… No! Toiro nearly yelped out in fright as the awful images returned. He didn’t know what he would do if something like that happened to one of his beloved children; it was too unbearable to think about. He needed a distraction, something to draw his attention away from all the frightful possibilities of the future. Anything would be better than sitting here, frozen and alone, with such pain torturing his heart.
