Tacio grunted softly as the muscles in his two front legs strained themselves to pull his small Red Wolf body atop the magnificent Belashi Butte. A sigh of accomplishment escaped the male’s muzzle. He was just about six months old, and although he has attempted to climb this mighty structure several times before, he had never before reached his goal of reaching very top of the reddish colored rock that towered over the territory. Although he was sure that any of his siblings could succeed at what he had just done fairly easily, he felt proud of himself for his consistent efforts. Tacio’s brother and sisters were massive compared to his runty structure, but the male had so much more determination to accomplish anything the other pups could than ever before.
Beautiful blue eyes attempted to absorb every inch of the spectacular view from such a high point, but it seemed impossible to do so. From this soaring height, squinting in order to see more clearly through the blazing early-fall sun, he swore he could see small figures weaving their way between the boulders below. Maybe they were hares or other small desert animals, but there was the other possibility that the figures he saw were other Tassos members. Or worse – loners. A shiver of fear shot through the tiny canine’s spine. Strange wolves scared the shy male the most because they were so unpredictable and he was so defenseless. Sure he was growing stronger each day now that he had begun individual daily strength training, but he knew of absolutely zero fighting moves or strategies. Asking his father for help in these skill areas was definitely on his list of things he needed to do, but to be honest, he was nervous.
At times, Tacio believed that his family was not satisfied with the kind of wolf he was. He was clearly different size-wise from his other family members, but that wasn’t the main reason for the small brute’s fear. He was overall quite intelligent, polite, and kind to all of his pack mates. What the Red Wolf lacked was self-confidence. He was continuously frightened or nervous about one thing or another. His entire life pretty much revolved around fear itself. The fear that he was not strong enough. The fear that he was not good enough. The fear that he was not loved. The fear that he was a disappointment. The fear that he would never, ever come close to being as wonderful as Rasalas, his father and biggest role model.
Another thought loomed inside of the puppy’s brain. He recalled his mother, Aowyn, once speaking to her four children and bringing it to their attention that Belashi Butte, the very rock Tacio was currently standing on, was completely off-limits. Now, the male was not one to break rules on a daily basis, but he had wanted this grand day to come so badly – the day when he would for once feel proud of himself and his strength. The pup had tried to resist the urge to climb the butte. However, he knew for a fact that the feat of climbing it would surely make him stronger in the long-run. He couldn’t help himself, the mysterious mountain-like structure had pulled him in with such force that he had needed to climb it. He had needed to prove that he could do it. Now, he just hoped he wouldn’t be caught.
