History: Sydas was one in a litter of four. One pup was stillborn, another died only hours after birth, and the last was her older brother, Kenai. Her parents were totally in love, but that was not all. Her mother's brother--her uncle--lived with them. Her mother, Eclipse, was completely black with yellow eyes, but was plagued by constant bad health that only worsened in the winter. Her father was a purebred Apennine. He had a chocolate brown coat and orange eyes. Sydas was the spitting image of her father at birth, but as she grew older, her coat lightened out, and her eyes took on a strange grey hue. Instead, Kenai adopted his father's eyes, and a mixture of his father's, and his grandmother's (on Eclipse's side) coat. The two pups adored their uncle, Kismet, affectionately calling him 'big brother'. They only referred to him as 'Uncle Kismet' or 'Uncle Kizzy' if they were in big trouble. They used the latter to try to win his sympathies, and it usually worked. He would step in to save them from their mother's wrath. Kismet spent every moment with them from the first time they left the den, until they were seven months. He taught them the basics of hunting and fighting. The two pups adored Kismet, and were therefore devastated when he told them about the scouting expedition that he was planning. He was going to go a hundred miles south and then spiral back home. He explained to the pups that this was necessary in order to expand their territory, which was also necessary, and this cheered them a little. He further told them that the trip should only take him two weeks to a month to complete, and that when he got back, they could help him expand the boundaries.
Five months later, when the pups turned one year, Kismet was still missing. Sydas and Kenai determined to go after him, find him, and bring him home. They wanted to do this for two reasons. Both of their parents had suffered when Kismet did not return home, but Eclipse had suffered the worst. She could often be found wallowing in depression, staring at the sky, or simply staring off into space; she was always crying. But most of all, Sydas refused to believe that her 'big brother' could be dead. Eclipse thought him dead, because if he wasn't, he would have found his way home. He would have never abandoned her. But Sydas refused to believe this. Maybe he had gotten lost? And so they determined to find him. However, fate had other plans. Eclipse and Seth suddenly found out that they were expecting. Late that summer, Eclipse birthed five pups. One died shortly after being born, but the other four were spunky and full of energy. Kenai and Sydas put off their travels to help raise and take care of the pups. When the pair turned two, the pups were ten months, and they felt that they could leave. The pups would soon be fully mature, and able to help their parents. So the day after their birthday, the day that Kismet turned five and coincidentally the day that the ship that he was harbored on would be demolished in a raging storm, they said their good-byes and left.
They traveled the hundred miles, and then they ran into the same pack that Kismet had. But, instead of scouting around it, they hid themselves and studied the pack for a week. When they learned how dark, cruel, and cunning the pack was, Kenai despaired of Kismet's life. He wouldn't have studied them like we did, Sydas! he yelled in one argument. He would have simply scouted around them to see how large they were, or he would have camped out and left the next day. Either way, they would attack him if he were within ten miles of the border! You've seen them! No, don't shake your head at me, Sydas. Listen! His exceptional capabilities don't matter, don't you see? If he's outnumbered, he could be killed. He had calmed by this point, and tears filled his orange eyes. Sydas's grey eyes were filled with horror and disbelief, but she firmly refused to believe that he was dead. You may go home, Kenai, if you wish to give up the search. Of course he wouldn't hear of such a thing, so they scouted around the pack with much more caution and stealth than their uncle had used. Once they were free from the pack area, the continued south. Sydas was convinced that Kismet had traveled this way. He would have been disoriented after the attack. But if he was disoriented, wouldn't he just roam, trying to figure out which was north? Why would he head in a certain direction? Sydas admitted that she didn't know why she felt the way she did, but all the same, she was convinced, and so they traveled south.
They ran into several more packs along the way, and they camped out and studied each in turn. Some were kind and let them rest in safety for a day or two, while others were indifferent, or dark and cruel. While running into one such pack, Sydas almost lost her life. She was camped out by herself because Kenai had left to go hunt for them both. She was laying down so as not to be seen, and was far enough away that he scent would not betray her, but close enough to see the activity of the pack, and to hear their calls. Suddenly, the most beautiful bird perched on a branch right above her, on a tree that stood at her back. It twittered happily, Hello, there. What are you doing? It was as if the bird knew that she could speak it's language. Sydas was almost instantly distracted, but not enough to really move. Hi! My brother and I are going south, but I need to rest badly. Just for a day or two. I'm studying this pack to see if they are friendly and will let me rest, or if we should just scout around them. The bird ruffled it's feathers in a friendly way, and trilled excitedly. Oh, I know this pack quite well! I can tell you! Sydas was now fully distracted, so excited by the fact that she could know instantly rather than in a week's time if she could rest. And that was when she made her mistake. In her excitement, she had jumped to her feet, not realizing how noisy her movements were. She turned her body towards the tree, and looked up to the branch. Sydas became slightly annoyed with herself: she had scared the bird away. She had moved to quickly. And then, as she started to turn around to return to her post, she felt a cold shiver go down her spine. A low growl and a soft rustling froze her actions.
The next thing Sydas remembers is waking up to an excruciating pain that lit her back on fire. First, she felt the pain. Then she heard a low, menacing growl, and her grey eyes shot open. Standing there, half-over and half in front of her, was Kenai. His lips were curled over his lips dangerously, and his orange eyes were like fire. The fur on his back was standing straight up, and he was slightly crouched. Another horrifying noise escaped his throat, and he spoke to three wolves that stood about five feet from him. I'm warning you. Leave. Now. The wolves glared at him, hate shining in their eyes, but after a few moments, they turned tail and left. One of them ran swiftly, while the other two ran much slower. One had a bad limp on his front leg, and blood was soaking his fur. The other sometimes stopped and leaned over his chest, as if his heart were burning. He also had a little blood on his coat. As soon as they were out of sight, Kenai relaxed and turned to look at Sydas. Sydas! Are you okay? What happened? You were perfectly hidden! How--? Sydas's pain-filled eyes silenced her brother instantly. What's wrong? Panic spiked his voice. Nothing. I'm fine. Sydas tried to stand up to reinforce her statement, but she yelped when pain stabbed at her back. Kenai refused to relocate her, despite the close proximity of the pack who had hurt her. He did not want to lose his bearings, and he was confident that he could protect her. And that he did. It didn't take long for Sydas's back to heal, because it had not been injured too badly, and they were soon back on their way.
After a few more months, nearing the end of fall, the siblings reached the Cape of Africa. They saw land in the distance, on the horizon of the vast ocean. Sydas was determined to go to the island to search for him there. Again, Kenai did not understand her logic. Why would he be on an island? He definitely wouldn't leave the mainland, Sydas. This is crazy. But Sydas was determined, and once again told Kenai that if he did not wish to come, he did not have to. Her brother rolled his eyes, sighed, and inclined his head. Well, go on then. And so they swam across, landing in the region of Tiayr.
Personality: Sydas is an interesting character indeed. She's so extremely complex, it's a wonder she can hold it all together. She has had a few compliments in her time, and she does know how to receive them. However, this is not the way to win her over. Sydas looks at the heart, not anything physical, and so showing her devotion and true caring will go a whole lot farther than complimenting her appearance. Besides, she's also quite talented and effective at diverting the conversation from herself. Sydas is very sweet, but she also has a great deal of humility. When asked to show off, she would most likely decline. She is willing to use her talents when it is helpful, but she dislikes showing off just so someone can know the extent of her capabilities. Sydas can be shy at times, but for the most part, she is very out-going.
Sydas is spunky and optimistic. She loves simply doing things. She does know the wisdom of planning ahead, but she also knows that you can only plan so much, and the rest is up to fate. She is quite perceptive, and is a very good judge of character. She can usually tell very early on whether or not someone is hiding something, or if they are trustworthy or not. But, despite this, she has a high level of optimism. She refuses to think darkly, and instead, is always the first one to come up with a bright alternative. She is always the first one to see the bright side of things, the first to give good advice, a happy note. She shines brilliantly with joy and optimism. She has a saying that she always uses when queried about trusting someone, or liking a dark wolf: "I trust everyone; it's the devil inside of them that I hate."
Sydas is quite the stubborn little thing. If she has made up her mind, you had best not try to change it, because you'd have better luck trying to convince a rock to become bread than you would trying to convince Sydas to change her mind. If you do not want whatever she has determined to happen, she will always give you a chance to back out. But she will never change her mind, or turn her head. Whatever she has determined will come to pass, one way or another. However, Sydas is also quite compassionate. She is gracious, very forgiving, and very understanding. She is slow to judge and quick to forgive. If you back out of something, or hurt her, she will almost always give you a second chance. It is simply not in her nature to turn her back on any creature, canine or otherwise.
Sydas's main goal is to find her uncle, but besides that, she wants to eventually settle down and have a family. She dreams of having little balls of fur tumbling over her paws, although she fancies that picture with her brother, Kenai, taking the role that Kismet took when she was a pup. Sydas is very attached to her brother, and has never lived a single day without him. In the deep crevices of her mind, she knows that she will one day probably not live beside him, but she never thinks of this. She simply cannot imagine life without Kenai.
