Avani’s history is highly peculiar when compared to that of the natives of Anikira. Born on a neighbouring continent, her parents were the alpha pair of a matriarchal pack of wolves residing along a vast coastline. Though females were regarded as the dominant figures within the pack, males were not seen as lowly or unworthy – they simply held no connection to their deity, Ilkhana, whom was believed to embody fertility and the moon. Their pack believed that the goddess resided in the ocean, thus they built their home as close as possible to the sea, and the cycles of the tides were as much an expression of Her will as were the cycles of fertility in the females of the pack.
Avani was born in a vast litter of ten pups, and the elders of the pack believed that such an extraordinary occurrence was a rare gift of rich fertility from their deity. Despite the fact that a few of the pups died shortly after birth, the remaining seven were seen as blessed, touched by Ilkhana herself. Her mother Sri, the Matriarch of the pack, was a wise and domineering mentor for the entire litter, who taught them all the ways and the will of their God – Avani’s father, Kalmali, had very little involvement in their rearing as the male’s duties were entirely unrelated to the nurturing of pups. Needless to say, the litter was doted on by countless other den maidens who all aided in their nursing and caring, until eventually, they became old enough to venture outside and be taught in the ways of hunting and swimming, a favoured and occasionally ritualised pastime of the pack.
As the pups grew, Avani’s three brothers were taught the appropriate conduct and responsibilities from other men in the pack, whilst Avani and her three sisters were indoctrinated with the obligations and spiritual duties held by the women of the pack. It quickly became apparent to Sri that Avani was highly incapable of ever taking her place as Matriarch due to her wayward, distractible nature, as well as her lack of dominance that her sisters quite clearly possessed. Though a gentle and loving creature, she was seen as impulsive, and her docile nature was an offense to their deity, who commanded all females to rise and lead the males of the pack. Avani knew of her mother’s lack of faith in her, but cared little for the disapproval, seeing her loss of devotion as a blessing – after all, if her mother didn’t see her as a suitable successor, there was no pressure in living up to such unreachable expectations. Instead, Avani invested much of her time in reveling in the attention of the young males of the pack, who were ever allured by her striking appearance and blessed status as a gift from Ilkhana.
At two years of age, at the cusp of sexual maturation, the time came for Avani and her sisters to be paired with their respectively chosen mates. Though an array of suitors lay at Avani’s feet, instead her mother elected a rather dull male by the name of Dasarathi to be her mate in the hopes that his calm nature would quell Avani’s capricious one. For a time, it did, and Avani soon conceived and gave birth to four healthy pups – not quite the astonishing number as borne by her mother, but a celebrated consecration of Ilkhana’s will nonetheless. Akin to her sisters who each birthed their own litter, Avani was a caring, devoted mother, which surprised both herself and Sri, who had come to expect very little commitment from her carefree daughter.
When the pups became six months of age, Sri passed away after sustaining a hunting injury that became severely infected, and Avani’s eldest sister Lakshmi was given the title of Matriarch. At first, her leadership was just and filled with good intention, but soon her sternness was replaced by harshness and Lakshmi began to impose her own laws, believing that her own ideologies were aligned with the will of Ilkhana. If any male adulterated against a female, they were to be maimed and left to drown in the rising tide. If a female conceived pups out of season, or birthed a litter of all stillborn, she was seen as marked by death by Ilkhana, and sent to suffer the same fate in the sea. Though Avani wholly opposed the introduction of such barbarism into their pack, and was the first to voice her disapproval to her tyrannical sister, her words were received with intolerance – the Matriarch said that if she pursued this rejection of her laws, then Avani too would be sent to the sea with all but shattered legs to keep her afloat.
Remaining quiet for fear of inciting her sister’s rage, Avani lay low within the pack for as long as she could endure – until her mate Dasarathi, wearied by her lack of affection for him, sought warmth from one of Avani’s sisters. The revelation came as a shock to the entire pack, and when given the order of death by Lakshmi, no one fought harder for his repentance than Avani, who refused to see the father of her pups be sentenced to death, regardless of his betrayal. She begged for his life to be spared, but her pleas and prayers fell on unhearing ears, and by sundown, Dasarathi’s corpse was already gone from the shore, consumed by the sea and the wrath of Ilkhana.
Despite wanting to leave the pack after witnessing such a gruesome act, Avani stayed for the sole purpose of consoling her children, who were all shattered by the loss of their father. Life in the pack became even more unbearable when Avani’s youngest sister, Ashwini, fell pregnant outside of the regular season; such abnormality was deemed an omen from Ilkhana, and the Matriarch ordered for Ashwini’s execution lest the pack invite calamity into their home. After the deed was done, and Avani had wept until all emotions had been exhausted from her heart – sorrow, anger, denial, and resentment – all that remained within her was the feeling of disgust towards her own pack for turning on itself so easily.
So she left, silently and cursing the very existence of Lakshmi. She bid her children farewell whilst they slept, torn between her maternal nature to stay with them, and the ultimate instinct of self-preservation, the latter proving to be more a powerful force of survival than love.
She fled quickly, her slender stature allowing her to be fleet of foot, remaining close to the ocean out of comfort more than necessity in the hope that Ilkhana would still watch over her, as long as she remained in sight of the sea. It soon dawned upon her that life as a lone wolf would be harder than she had ever anticipated – without shelter or the security of wolves around her, she felt constantly vulnerable and exposed to the wilderness surrounding her. Hunting alone proved to be almost impossible, except when smaller, unfortunate creatures graced her path on occasion. Predators lurked in every direction, their dangerous scents a disturbing reminder of their constant proximity. Eventually, Avani fell into the heat of her cycle, and one of those predators made himself known to her almost immediately; a dark, brutish wolf named Agavar, who was quick to overpower the young female and sew his seed in a hurried but violent bout of lust. She escaped the ordeal as soon as he was finished, but each day the wind brought scent of his oncoming shadow, his age and experience allowing him to track the female with ease, despite her haste to escape him.
For two whole months, his stalking terrorised her every movement, until the weight in her belly became too much and she was forced to find refuge beneath a collapsed tree trunk, overgrown with moss and shrubs – an ideal whelping den. As she gave birth, the agony almost as unbearable as her innate fear of the brute who followed her, she could sense Agavar’s presence moving soundlessly through the surrounding trees, watchful and vigilant, but never approaching so far as to reveal his exact whereabouts. After delivering three pups, she fell into an exhausted and fitful sleep, unable to relax and nurse her pups in peace whilst she knew Agavar remained hidden from sight. He watched them closely, and not a day passed where he would restrain from attempting to mount the defenseless female. As she was no longer in heat, Avani believed him to be crazed and damaged in the head, but she could not continue running from him due to the infancy and weakness of her pups.
Tolerating his cruel advances and aggression for the better part of a year, Avani eventually became so enraged by Agavar’s unrelenting harassment that she lashed out in a blind moment of bravery, her panic and desperation culminating in a fierce confrontation that she would surely lose. Even if all three of her yearling children stood in her defense, they would all have been outmatched by the sheer strength and madness of their father – and so she ordered for them to run, whilst his rage was focused solely on her. At the sight of her children fleeing far into the trees, she fled in the opposite direction.
She ran for days without sleeping, or stopping to catch breath. Without food, water or rest, her mind became delirious with fatigue, yet even at the point where her paw pads became bloodied and numb, and her head hung heavy with bleak exhaustion, she did not stop to search timidly upon the horizon for his stare. Eventually, Agavar’s scent faded from the trailing winds, gone from her world; his presence remaining only within her memories to haunt her on dark and dreamless nights.
Something changed within Avani from this point onwards – some strange shift in persona that hardened her with a guarded perception of the world. She met many along her travels, wolves varying in size and intimidation, and she soon learned who deserved to be feared and who deserved only a backward glance as she departed them. She no longer softened at the warmth of another, unless pretending to doing so would grant her passing or refuge. She understood what it meant to relinquish pride and dignity if it meant a hot meal straight from the deer’s hide. The sadness of her changed life quickly turned to acceptance of herself as she understood how easy and simple her days could be if she gave others what they wanted in return for what she needed. Sex, friendship, an open ear to another’s woe – these were her currencies, so long as a stranger had a heart’s plea for company.
By the mistaken fate of serendipity, she befriended an inscrutable brute who referred to himself as Wayfarer – a name most unusual to the dubious female - whose intentions happened to be aligned with hers, and the two ended up travelling together for some time. Though slight of stature, he was a silver tongue in truest form and could talk his way into the heart of any fool who spared him more than a moment – including Avani. Their mutual companionship slowly but inevitably paved a winding path towards what could have been… love, though the word itself was never spoken between the two. She fell pregnant shortly after they settled somewhere peaceful and close to the sea, as insisted by Avani. Though she no longer practiced her faith outwardly with prayers and the monthly sacrament, inwardly she still held Ilkhana close to her spirit, and appreciated knowing that the deity’s waters were always close to her.
She gave birth to two beautiful pups – both dead, and likely to have never truly been alive. Though she tried to nuzzle and coax breath from each of their small bodies, they made no sound and became cold too quickly, despite Avani’s frantic efforts to coddle them into her fur. She called to her god - was this punishment? How could such innocent beings deserve a fate so terrible and cruel!
Pained by his mate’s hysterical cries, Wayfarer attempted to draw her away from her nest to leave the pups to their eternal peace, but she fought him fiercely, and refused to leave them be. Wearied by the unrewarded ordeal of labour, Avani soon collapsed in sleep, still whimpering in distress, and woke to the absence of her pups. Wayfarer, too, was gone, obviously laying them to rest far from their mother’s grieving state.
When he returned, he discovered that Avani had disappeared from the den, and upon discovering her trail, followed her steps down to the beach. The sight laid bare before him chilled him to the core – his mate sat in silence, staring out at sea, with naught but emptiness paling her eyes.
“Leave me,” she spoke. “I must speak with Ilkhana.”
He obliged her request, leaving Avani to her solitude, but not before turning to watch her wade out in silence, slipping into the tide as though born to return to its depths. Though hurt by her desertion, he sympathized, even understood, her need to do so. To find Ilkhana. Scorned by her god’s treachery in taking her children, she sought answers from the only place where she knew her questions would be heard.
He prayed to every god, existent or not, that she would find them.
When and how long it took her to wash up on the shores of Anikira is yet to be told.
Personality: Avani may seem like your average doe-eyed bitch, but beneath her coy, diffident shell, there is something much darker, attributed mainly to her complicated and thorny past with the opposite sex. Though a kind wolf at heart, a life of hardship and playing martyr to her own fair nature has taught her that there are more important things in the world than kindness. Self-preservation, for example – there isn’t a thing on this earth than Avani would not do to further her own survival. Stealing, trickery, and seduction are the realms of advantage that Avani calls home; if she were starving and without the means to hunt, she would gladly pilfer a meal from a lesser being; if she were wounded, she would gladly lie through her teeth behind the reasoning of her injuries if it meant receiving aid from another soft-hearted soul; and if all other means were exhausted, Avani would gladly lift her tail and submit to any male who offered shelter or protection. All of the things that noble wolves would lift their snouts at in distaste, Avani would do without hesitation, shame or disgrace – but do not let her blatantly unabashed measures fool you into thinking she is selfish or cold-hearted, as this is far from the truth. Behind every action, there is a battleground of morals in her mind that simply tear her asunder, thus speckling her history with a confused trail of both honourable and terrible decisions.
Though she values her own survival and freedom above all else, including her own dignity, she would never speak or act cruelly to another wolf, as the gain for doing so is minimal. Avani often gives the first impression of being a very pleasant wolf, complying easily and behaving in perfect accordance as every submissive wolf should – however, she has a sharp mind and keen perception that allows her to quickly judge whether she could reap any benefits from further beguiling the other wolf’s interest. If they seemingly have nothing to offer, Avani becomes impassive and easygoing, easily earning friendship with her harmless appeal; however, if it seems that they do have something that would benefit her, the gears in her mind begin to whirr over the many ways she could entice them into her fold. Because her insight knows no bounds, she is highly judicious and can quickly determine exactly what the other wolf wants and exactly how she should behave to deliver that to them. When Avani becomes intent on pleasing another wolf, whether male or female, her character tends to shift seamlessly in accordance with their behaviour – if they receive her sternly, she remains docile and demure, but if they receive her openly with wit and wag, she can dish back the banter with charming abandon. Most wolves are unable to resist her sweet and unassuming nature, as evidenced by the many males in her past that unknowingly found themselves wrapped around her little finger.
It is worthy to note that, whilst Avani is avid in seeking approval and earning trust, the companionship and affection on her behalf is entirely superficial; not because she is callous, but because she is innately fearful of committing to anything that does not in turn reward her. She loves to be used, as the terms of such arrangements are usually made clear and concise. Protection, shelter, water and food – these are the rewards she seeks and feels at ease receiving. When her relationships span beyond the throes of lust and shallow love, she feels out of her element and without control, and if history has any merit, she is likely to balk and flee from whoever dare impose such affection upon her.
