Lalani steadily awakened. There was a dull noise pulling her from the deep dark place she had been. It was strange, a background noise, a strange shushing, almost like static except that the sound changed. It would get louder and then quieter, like it was getting closer then pulling away. SHUSH-shhhhh. SHUSH-shhhhh. SHUSH-shhhhh. It could almost be considered relaxing...if it weren't so damn annoying. Lani had liked where she had been before. It had been peaceful, quiet. It had almost felt like she had been asleep, but this was different. She didn't have any nightmares. She didn't like having to leave it. SHUSH-shhhhh. SHUSH-shhhhh. What is that infernal noise? Lani couldn't locate the source of the sound. It was pitch black and she couldn't see a thing. As she was slowly pulled to awareness, she felt her body coming back from the numbness she had enjoyed so much. He muscles ached. Every fiber in her body felt as if it had been torched, ran over and pounded with a meat tenderizer. She lungs scraped and rattled. She felt like she had been gargling with nails. There had been no pain until that obnoxious noise had penetrated her peace.
As she became more aware, Lani became more uneasy. Why couldn't she see? Where was she? It took a few seconds but then it hit her. Wandering, the storm, fighting the waters...giving up. I'm dead. SHUSH-shhhhh. SHUSH-shhhhh. And by all no means could this be any sort of heaven. There was too much pain and the stupid shushing felt like it was right in her ear. The darkness here seemed much too close, as if someone had thrown a sheet over her eyes, making her feel claustrophobic. Her already sore lungs fought harder to continue to breathe. "Breathe sis," a voice whispered through her head. Definitely hell. My own personal hell. There was no escaping her brothers voice. He haunted her thoughts, though she was usually good at suppressing them except for at night. She had gotten used to little rest with the nightmares plaguing her sleep. She couldn't hate him for haunting her. It was all her fault. He had every right to hold it against her. After all, he had been killed because of her. So this is what I'm going to have to look forward to for the rest of eternity? Alone in some wasteland? "Of course not, you'll have me." Desperately Lani tried to return to the dark numbness she had been in before, but it was futile.
Suddenly a sharp pain stabbed her skull and her muscles reacted. Her whole body lurched, as if to stand and her eyes snapped open. The sudden air on her sore eye balls stung and she had to blink several times to wash away the sand. Things came to her slowly. There WAS something over her face. Turning her head, it fell off. It was a large leaf, palm-like. The view was a little odd considering she was laying down but she could tell she was laying across an open and sandy beach. It was night, which she was grateful for. It wouldn't have been pleasant for her sore eyes to have to deal with the sunlight too. And the shushing, as it turned out, was the ocean. Which also happened to be right next to her, lapping at her paws. She spotted some sort of bird flapping away in a desperate attempted to flee from her. No doubt it had been reason for the sharp pain. Carefully, she slowly stood, pulling her legs under her. Lani's muscles screamed. The water must have given her a serious beating. Of course she hadn't died. She wasn't lucky enough, there was no hell greater than the one she lived in. She trudged towards the tree-line, hoping she could find a source of freshwater.
Muscles protesting, eyes stinging and lungs burning she pushed through the foliage. She wasn't going to give in to her weaknesses. Who knows how long she had been out. From the feel of things, she had swallowed a lot of seawater and her head ached from it. After more than an hour of following the plants she lucked upon a trickling stream. It wasn't big enough for her to wash in, so she followed it's course but upstream rather than down. It didn't take long before the stream got bigger but she could hear a roaring in the distance and decided to keep going. Soon enough she came upon some beautiful waterfalls. Sadly, she wasn't really in the mood to take in the sight. She needed to get this sand out of her fur. It had already worked its way in and was rubbing against her skin creating sore places. She didn't want it rubbing her raw. She waded out, letting the flow of water rush over her back. The current was enough to wash away the loose sand. All it took was a little bit of movement, she could feel the deeper stuff working its way free too. Lowering her snout, she started to drink her fill, ignoring the searing pain that flashed down her throat. She continued to wade in the water but scanned the forest. She had been cast away from all she had known. Again. Where in the world are you now?
