The slowly heating sun felt good along her back, seeping into her shorter fur and warming her small body. The climate on this continent was much to her liking. She had only been present a few weeks, but the mild winter gave an indication of a rapidly approaching spring and summer. Alina was fond of the spring and summer, they gave way to new life, life that was to fragile to survive winter's coldness. Alina was not so frail. She had survived this place remarkably well, hunting easily off the abundance of smaller prey. She could not remember ever having tasted the flesh of elk or deer, but she was partial to the meat of rabbits. She wasn't of a large enough constitution to take down anything much bigger than a large hare. She had eaten recently ad felt revitalized in this new land. It was hers to explore, her to conquer. The looked forward to the warmth of spring, for it brought a favorite meal of hers into the land. Newborn creatures were helpless and easy for Alina to hunt. The small rabbit's offspring were a delicacy that Alina couldn't resist. She continued on plodding gently on towards nothing in particular. She had no great plans that demanded her attention.
She was slightly disgruntled with the fact that she hadn't met with any others of her kind. She had never met with another wolf before, or didn't have any memory of any such meeting, but she craved the companionship of another creature. There must be others like me somewhere. She couldn't imagine being alone in this place, no matter how beautiful it was. She would end up going mad if she couldn't find someone to talk to, other than herself. Although she was small, she was not weak and could defend herself to an extent. She was also very quick and could outrun most predators who would seek to eat her. She knew that many predators would seek to eat her seeking an easy meal. She could not bring herself to blame them for such ideas. She was a prime item of prey for a larger cat or even a bear. She would hold no grudge against them. The day was beautiful and so was Alina's prospects of a life in this land. Her hopes began to focus on the joining of a pack, she knew they existed, could hear their chorus of howling at night. Nights that were lonely and cold. She sought to find a family that would love her, and care for her. More than anything she wanted to mother pups. She adored pups, their innocence and sweet nature. They were also very playful. Alina could not remember how old she was or if she had a family elsewhere, but the idea of settling into a new life here was a temptation for her.
It was still the breeding season, but Alina couldn't see herself mothering pups on her own. She didn't know if her small frame would be able to bear such a burden alone. Not without the support of a family. She was also unsure of who she could reproduce with. She knew no other wolf here, and considering her small stature she might not be able to bear the young of a larger wolf. She didn't want to bring pups into the world who were doomed to be small for the rest of their lives, but she also didn't want to die during the birthing. She wouldn't be able to bear losing her pups even if it was through her own death. She shook her head trying to remove herself from such fantasies. She would simply need to live her life and enjoy the beauty and nature around her. I don't know where I came from, but surely nothing could be as splendid as this.
There was an odd smell in the air, something she had not encountered before. It was an odd collection of scents that all smelled familiar, but distinct in and of itself. She followed the smell as best she could unaware of the fact that she had stumbled into pack territory, and that she was bound for trouble. The smell was distinctly wolf. Her tail wagged with excitement and a gentle whine escaped her lips. Finally a new friend. Alina gave one more yip in her excitement before her high pitched howl broke through the silence. Summoning whatever future this land held for her.
