"It is alright Bal. Try again. You will get it."
Any disappointment he might have felt melted away as his mother leaned down to nudge him to his paws, and Balthazar turned with a smile to butt his head against her muzzle affectionately. While Cim was the only one who he truly knew he could not live without already, he truly loved his mother, and he allowed the brief moment of affection to show in his gaze before he was turning towards Cimeries with interest as a flurry of movement pulled his gaze to his sister.
She’d caught her mouse on her first try, and instead of jealousy, Balthazar felt only pride for his sister. ”Good job, Cim! You’re even better at this than me,” he said, his tiny tail wagging as he watched Cimeries pad closer, the creature still alive and wriggling pathetically in her grasp. He frowned at the squeals it was making, finding its panic confusing. Certainly death wasn’t so scary…and didn’t the mouse realize it was inevitable at that moment, anyways? Wouldn’t it have been better for it to die quietly and bravely instead of squeaking so frantically?
Roka’s words drew him out of his thoughts, his eyes widening as she first informed Cimeries that she could eat the mouse, before offering him encouragement once more. Determined this time, he returned to the hole a short distance away, where once more he crouched patiently, waiting. This time when the mouse emerged, Bal did not miss it. His jaws closed over the squeaking creature as he lunged, and triumphantly he fell back onto his bottom, flashing a grin at Roka – or as much of one as he could with the furry creature dangling from his jaws.
A moment later he dropped it, only to place a heavy paw upon the mouse’s tail, giggling quietly under his breath as the creature frantically attempted to pull away from his grasp. A moment later his laughter died swiftly, ending in a startled gasp as the mouse turned to bite as his toes. ”Ow,” he lamented, slapping his other paw atop the mouse’s head to hold it still as a little frown pulled at his muzzle. ”Mother said I can eat you, so that really wasn’t very wise,” he informed the mouse, his voice low and serious, as if the frenzied animal could truly understand him.
Still the creature struggled even as Bal leaned down to close his mouth over its body, his small teeth piercing the skin of its throat. As the mouse stilled Balthazar pulled away to watch it raptly, taking note of how easily it passed from the world of the living to the world of the dead. ”See?” He told the corpse quietly as he settled to begin picking at it. ”Death didn’t look so bad to me.” And then he contented himself with eating until at last, halfway through the mouse, he looked up at Roka and Cimeries, beaming. ”That was fun. I think I like hunting – but I’d like to hunt something bigger. This strange creature died too easily.”
