As Najira stepped up beside him, he gave her a quick smile. He was glad of her support. Even though she had only just joined the pack, it was nice to know that he had someone on his side.
He didn’t mind loners as long as they weren’t disrespectful.
Toiro’s lips rose up into a silent snarl, and ivory fangs could be seen at the side of his mouth. It was only a warning that her attitude had displeased him – he didn’t feel the need to assert his dominance any more than that. She should know that he was the Alpha, and therefore a powerful enemy to make. If she chose to get on the wrong side of him and his pack, that was entirely her choice, as Toiro wasn’t going to try to provoke a fight.
It seemed that the female had realised her mistake, and her aggressive posture diminished.
He nodded as Zaylin and Beren told him their names, glad that they had chosen to share the information. His eyes turned expectantly towards the skinny she wolf, who dipped her head politely before telling him why she had crossed the borders unannounced.
Typical as the excuse was, he could believe it in this instance. A starving wolf such as this one would have been so intent on catching her prey that she would not have noticed anything else. He didn’t like having the markers ignored – he was sure no alpha did – but there wasn’t much he could do about it, except to confront the unknowing intruders as soon as possible.
The female suddenly froze in midsentence, and stayed like that for a short while before returning back to reality. Toiro blinked, unsure of what had just happened. The she wolf now seemed dazed and confused, and somewhat surprised by her surroundings.
His eyes widened further as she stepped in closer to him and pleaded for help. She told him that she couldn’t remember anything from the past weeks, and that she thought she was going insane. The gears in his brain were turning rapidly, but he made himself keep the same outward appearance.
“Hey there, don't worry, Vaniel” he said in a quiet calming voice. “I’m the alpha of the pack that lives here, so I can offer you a place to stay while you get better. If you’d like to?”
What? Had he just said that aloud? He didn’t want an insane wolf in his pack!
But then he remembered his own suicidal attempt. It was possible to recover from depression – he was the living example of that. And look where he was now! He never would have thought that one day he might lead a pack. Not in those dark days after Nikia’s death.
Depression didn’t explain why she couldn’t remember where she was though. He told himself that he’d ask her more about it when they were alone.
