He responded to her before she could even process what it meant for her to be at his feet. Her submission changed something in him, and he softened slightly. Their eyes met fleetingly, but even so, Naira could see that there was something there, deep within the ivory brute irises. Then, he was looking at his feet and tossing his head as if he were clearing his mind. "I'm sorry. You, uh, you should go." He spoke quietly, his voice barely a mutter. Naira blanched as she continued to peer at him with her bright green eyes. She never thought she would hear him say the words ‘I’m sorry.’ But there they were, hanging in the air between them.
She did not want to leave this brute. She was inexplicably drawn to him, and she knew then, peering at him with her bright eyes, that she would have waited days for him to come around. She also knew, however, that doing so would not be wise. As much as she wanted to know the ivory brute—as much as she wanted to help him—she was going to have to let him go. There was something dangerous stirring within him, something deeply buried under a mask of calm indifference. And here she was, pushing and pulling him. Soon, he would burst.
Those thoughts were the only things keeping her still as he stood and made his way around her to the front of the cave. He didn’t look back as his white tail disappeared around the lips of stone. And then he was gone.
Naira held herself still as the wind whistled hollowly through the tiny cave, as if the very movement of her body would disturb what had just happened. She waiting, counting her breaths until she knew Elijah would be far enough away. Then, she straightened, shaking out her fur slowly. Sorrow pierced her heart as she stood in the shadowed cave.
And once again, I’m alone. The thought drifted across her mind like a whisper, fading almost as soon as it had come.
