It was the early hours of dawn that found Messoria shifting in her sleep, flame-hued eyes cracking open to stare blearily at the bundles of fur snuggled against her flank. Her sides rose and fell gently with the promise of breath as she flicked her gaze across each of them, the plethora of coat colors pleasing to the mother’s eye. Her half-lidded orbs briefly inspected each slumbering body, checking that each of them was truly sleeping; every day they grew nearly as much as their curiosity, and after their first outing, Messoria found that she had to keep a heavy eye upon them. Nimue was practically curled around Fawn, who was half the size of her sister, with Croix and Hyperion not far from the two. And Morrigan –
Messoria’s head jerked upwards, ears splaying back against her skull as her panicked gaze flicked from body to body. Where is she? As gently as she could manage, Messoria extracted herself from the tangle of bodies, heart twisting as she glanced towards each corner of her cozy den. Nothing. Moving as swiftly as her slender body would allow without making excessive noise, she crept towards Lichen’s den, hoping that her ebony daughter had decided to pay a visit to the neighboring mother and her own pups…but no. As it swiftly became clear that Morrigan was not within the dens, Messoria began to pick her way through the tangle of caves and mothers who slept soundly with their young, her mind cycling through imagines of the cougars and alligators that called Ina’mos their home. Morrigan was too young to be on her own, and if she’d wandered too far from the dens without attracting notice…her breath hitched in her chest at the thought. She was moving more quickly now, weaving expertly around the other inhabitants as a fresh breeze slid through the halls, suggesting that she was near to the opening of the dens. She rounded the land bend, very nearly running now, when suddenly she faltered and came to a brief halt. The dull light of the new day illuminated a small form silhouetted at the opening of the cavern, and after giving herself a moment to calm her frenzied heart, Messoria darted forward to where Morrigan sat.
”Do you have any idea how frightened I was to find you gone?” She asked, her voice an even mixture of somber and cross. Her heart still pounded faintly in her chest as she stood rigidly over her daughter, amber eyes narrowed as she stared down into the icy blue eyes that were so much like Goliath’s. After a moment she sighed, lowering herself to her haunches beside her daughter, her tail curling around her small paws. ”Why are you here, Morrigan? Isn’t it a bit early to be sneaking off?” Perhaps she should have been more stern, and yet the relief that coursed through her with the realization that Morrigan was safe left little room for anger – although it was certainly there, however dampened it may have been.
