[attr="class","pltxt"]Her legs moved as swiftly as they could under the circumstances, her tiny paws seeming to fly across the ground beneath her. She could faintly make out the shape of the caverns in the distance by the light of the setting sun, and it was towards it that she hastened, wincing as a sharp contraction gripped her once more. It was time, and while this normally might have filled another expectant mother with glee, Calantha’s heart instead pounded with fear. It’s too soon. Over and over this repeated in her head as she went, like a mantra that she couldn’t shake, seeming to resonate in her very bones. She’d promised Rikez that things would go smoothly, that they were possible, but now the doubts crept into her head, entwining with her fear.
At last she came to the mouth of the tunnels, where the coyote then paused, tipping back her angular muzzle and howling. It was different, she knew, that the howls of her pack mates; high-pitched and seemingly more eerie as her worry seeped into the notes, calling for Rikez, wherever he may have been. There would be no mistaking who the howl, which ended in a volley of yips, belonged to. A moment later she was hastening into the coolness of the cavern, winding through the tunnels. She’d nearly reached the spot she’d designated, just far enough away from the trickle of water that it would not pose a threat to her pups, when another burst of pain seared through her, and she paused, gasping. Her shoulder brushed roughly against the stone walls as she swayed, but a moment later it passed, and she was darting forward again.
A sigh of relief slipped from her muzzle as she came to the place at last, lowering herself gently upon a bed of moss that spanned half the area. The pains had hit her suddenly and unexpectedly while she’d been walking to try to relieve the ache in her muscles. At first she’d been confused, not even daring to think that it was labor when it was so very early…but there was no mistaking it now. The pain was gripping her belly, her hips, and after a moment she laid on her side, knowing that she did not have long.
When at last the pain became so severe that it was breathtaking, Calantha knew it was time. She did not know in that moment if Rikez was there yet, if he’d slipped in during her moments where she attempted to cope with the discomfort. Now there was nothing except the overwhelming pressure and stinging in her hips, the desire to push, and beneath it all, the constant twinge of unease. The process seemed endless, her effort leaving her gasping for several precious moments that she spent gathering her breath, and then beginning once again. But at last, just when Calantha’s panic was beginning to truly rise, their first pup made its way into the world.
Or, rather, her. She was tiny, her gender revealed as immediately Calantha turned, ignoring the dull pain that she knew would rise again as she began to clean her first daughter. For a heartbeat there was no noise, no movement, and then suddenly a squeal escaped from the small pup, indignant as her mother licked the grime from her black-and-ivory pelt. Calantha could not keep the grin from her muzzle as she lifted the pup, gently nuzzling the wriggling form closer to her own stomach. And then, just as she became fascinated watching her daughter suckle greedily, her pain intensified.
Again she labored, careful now not to squirm too much so as not to disturb her firstborn. It became apparent very quickly that her second born was either much larger than its sister – or perhaps simply more stubborn. Time was no longer something that she was conscious of as Calantha lay there, saffron gaze planted firmly upon the rocky ceiling above her, the various names of her Gods flickering through her skull, though as if through a fog. And then with one final burst of pain, it was done.
This one she discovered was a boy, larger than his sister but still small, perhaps due to their early birth. She wondered how big they would grow to be as she groomed him, revealing brilliant shades of browns and reds and golds in varying colorations upon his pelt before placing him beside his sister. But still her body was not done, and once again she fell into the motions of labor, her breathing heavy but her will unwavering. They will all be healthy, she told herself as she pushed, as if she could will it to be so with her thoughts. They will all be strong. And again a pup took its first breath of air, this time another girl, with a coat of similar colors to her brother. She was of similar sizing to her sister, however, downright diminutive…but healthy. That was all that mattered. Pride swelled in her chest as she placed the second female beside her brother, before laying back to breathe. At last it seemed as if she was done.
And then, again, she felt it. How many will I have? She found herself wondering as she dedicated herself to her task. Three beautiful, lively pups already laid before her, and while Calantha did not know how much longer she could endure the pain of labor, she knew it would be well worth the struggle in the end. The final pup that she birthed was as dark as night, aside from the lightening fur along his chest and stomach. And even as she cleaned him he did not move; her first daughter had scared her, too, but this one…he was taking longer to come around, his tiny chest not rising, and just as Calantha began to truly panic…he breathed. An audible sigh slipped from her muzzle as he began to make snuffling noises, and she lifted him, depositing him safely alongside his siblings.
At last it seemed clear that her body was finished, and she laid back against the bed of moss, exhausted. Still, her gaze lifted, shining with love and joy as it settled upon Rikez. A tired smile pulled at her muzzle, her neck stretching as she beckoned him closer with her gaze. ”Two lovely girls,” she breathed, ”and two handsome boys. We’re so lucky, Rikez.”
