History:
Maikoa was one of three children born to a lone, twisted female named Veleda on the southeast coast of Africa. Maikoa was the first pup to emerge, therefore her mother saw her as the only one worthy of life. Using the juice of a poisonous flower that was native to South America - but brought to the continent by humans - she created a diluted mixture that she then proceeded to drip into each of the younger pups hopeful, open mouths which killed them peacefully yet quickly. Maikoa was the name of the deadly flower, which lead to the naming of Veleda's remaining daughter.
Her mother was insane, spending her days creating deadly mixtures and potions with the plant life that thrived all around her. She rarely had a reason to use these toxic creations, for she did not kill for sport. Veleda identified herself as the Synodeía (Greek for escort) of Death, or simply the Synodeía. She told her daughter that it was a gift, her ability to send anyone to Death himself with such precision and ease. Maikoa, too, possessed this gift according to her mother and would eventually become the Synodeía, herself.
While Mai was very young, Veleda paid little attention to her other than the basic necessities for life. She was too occupied with her work to nurture her daughter properly, but she usually kept the puppy tucked between her foreleg and chest while she sat for hours on end, creating countless poisons that could kill with the consumption of only one drop. She would sing her daughter ancient lullabies from her past while she worked, which would keep Mai calm and out of trouble for the time being.
As she grew, her mother began to pass on her teachings to her only offspring. She taught Mai everything she knew about plants and her "art," which her daughter learned and memorized with ease. The other part of her lessons regarded the position of Synodeía itself, and in turn Death as well. Maikoa learned that Death was the one true power that kept the world in motion. Death was a force that should only be met when the perfect time arrives, and it was the Synodeía's duty to help others along when that time came.
Maikoa worshiped Death and Veleda, whom she was instructed to only address as "My Synodeía," but did so only to please her mother. Even though she had been taught in a way that made Death a purely religious force, Maikoa viewed it more as the driving force of nature. In truth, she saw any aspect of "religion" to be absurd, and anyone who believed in such a thing were weak. She didn't dare tell her mother this, for a future Synodeía with disobedient thoughts was expected to meet Death immediately.
Maikoa soon came of age, as in reached sexual maturity, and that marked the beginning of her Final Year. Thus, Veleda had one more year to teach her daughter before passing on the title. This was the year in which the most important lessons were to be taught and the ceremonial inauguration were to take place at the end. The teachings included the great importance of abstinence. According to Veleda, the Synodeía was loyal only to Death, and therefore could not perform any mating activity unless it is with Death itself. When this happened, that was the sign that a new Synodeía was to be born and taught accordingly.
Finally came the concluding ceremonies that marked the end of Mai's learning years. First, her mother was to give her "the scar," which she did so by raking her claws across the right side of her daughter's face. Then, Maikoa was instructed to kill her mother by using the techniques she had learned. At first, she was unsure, but Veleda assured her that this was the perfect and right timing for her to finally meet Death. After her mother had been killed, Maikoa was to swim away from the land that Veleda had served, until she reached a land of her own on which she would finally become the Synodeía.
She did just this and washed up onto the shores of Anikira. Free from her mother's constant watch, Maikoa was able to be a different kind of Synodeía - the one that her mother would have never let her be.
Personality:
Surprisingly enough, despite her close contact with her mother, Maikoa does not retain all of her personality traits or beliefs. Some things, however, are similar. For one thing, Maikoa shares her mother's love and interest in mixing parts of different plants in order to create deadly potions meant to kill. However, unlike Veleda, Maikoa is also open-minded enough to be intrigued by mixtures that can also heal. She greatly prefers those that are toxic but isn't against healing entirely. She is infatuated by the idea that there are endless combinations of plant juices and parts that each will perform a different task.
She has a good memory and an exquisitely smart, yet twisted mind. She can use her intelligence to be very manipulative, and she will sometimes speak in riddles like her mother sometimes did. Unlike her mother, though, she allows herself to have some fun other than solely poison-making. She loves nature in its entirety, and enjoys swimming and exploring and will even enjoy these activities with another wolf. She sees other wolves as her "children" and will often address them this way, but only out of formality. She is not a true leader (or "mother") at heart and will follow another's lead if she finds the leader to be level-headed and worthy. Trust is not something she requires in a leader or peer, but respect is definitely a must.
Regarding love and romance, Mai is an empty-hearted female. So far, she does not know what real love is or even that it could possibly exist. Her core belief is that of her mother's - abstinence is necessary to be successful. However, she doesn't think of Death as a physical being that can impregnate her like her mother said. Mai believes that if a male appeared to her that had similar qualities to the force of Death, then it meant that he was worthy and right to be the wolf that fathers her offspring.
In reality, Maikoa's true character is not entirely evil or savage. Her hobbies may reflect a danger-loving, possibly twisted side to her, but the truth is that she is only intrigued by the idea of Death and aware of its importance in the way that the world works. She enjoys the feeling of power when she makes her lethal creations, and isn't afraid to use them for the right reasons, but much like her mother, she doesn't kill for sport while she is in her right mind.
However, since arriving on Anikira, faint hallucinations of her mother's voice in her head sometimes push her to her limits. The voice is not really that of her mother's - in fact, it is just the darkest part of Maikoa's brain speaking out. The voice urges her to do horrible things, and although Mai can usually fight it off, sometimes she gets overwhelmed and becomes a different wolf entirely. That wolf is blood-thirsty, lustful, and everything her mother tried to teach her not to be. It is rare that this side of her comes out, but when it does, it is best to steer very clear of her for one's own safety.
