There was nothing in the world that equalled the comfort and contentment that Harpy found in sleeping surrounded by her family. Nestled amongst the warm bodies of her siblings, the coy-wolf hybrid dozed softly – only just returning to consciousness after a night filled with vivid, exciting dreams. In her dream, she had been chasing her siblings, Rowan, Lyra, and Sirius, around in the dens and down to the aquifer, and when they returned their parents announced that they would finally be let outside to explore the world above ground. So ecstatic was Harpy that she’d bounded ahead of her family, leaving their voices far behind, and just as she reached the blinding bright light of the outside world, Harpy had woken up.
For a brief moment she had been upset that it was only a dream, especially as it felt so real, and because she had been so close to tasting freedom, but the security she had awoken to soon calmed her back down. Now she lay snugly, with her black and white head rested on her one of her brother’s backs. Which one, she could not be certain. She would have guessed Rowan, but in the low light and her half-asleep, dopey state she could not make out the colours, and their scents were all mixed together anyhow. Parting her jaws, Harpy yawned, wide and sleepy, followed by a soft squeak. She would be happy to lie here for a little while longer, the breathing bodies of her family kept her feeling safe and protected, but equally there was a whole day of exploring ahead.
Harpy lifted her head and glanced around, her amber eyes soft and curious. She found that it was Sirius whose body she’d been using as a pillow, the rich array of browns that painted his coat became obvious the sooner her eyes grew used to the darkness. His colouring, along with her sister, Lyra, more closely resembled their mother’s. Her own coat, and her brother Rowan’s, took after their father. Harpy had inherited his intense amber eyes, too, but not his stature. In fact, Harpy was the smallest of all her siblings, even though she was the oldest.
“Hey,” she whispered, wriggling a little as she began to grow restless on her own. “Are you awake?” She poked Sirius gently in his ribs, hoping it would stir him if he weren’t already awake. Then she rolled over and did the same to whichever sibling was at her other side. “Rowan? Lyra?” she continued, bright eyes searching for any signs of movement. Her parents tended to wake up only when they’d been jumped on several times, but she lifted her head to see if either of them had stirred before her this morning.
