The Apennine wolf didn’t wake once during the night. His dreams were short and forgettable. At one point, Hawkeye thought he could feel someone else pressing against his fur, but he couldn’t have been sure. It could have been a dream. During the night however, the brute did roll over onto his back legs raised into the air. The pads of his front paws gingerly touched his chest. Maven’s paw, which had been touching his flank, was no longer near Hawkeye’s body. He wouldn’t know of her slight touch during the night. Her flirts had completely gone over his head. While Hawkeye was bright in a sense, romantics meant little to him. No one had ever given meaning to the word “love.” The only wolf Hawkeye had once been interested in was stolen away from him by his own brother. Since then, he had been so consumed with the loss that there was little room left in his heart. With Anikira’s promise for a new beginning, maybe that would change. The outside world shone in through the entrance to their small home away from home. As a ray peered into Hawkeye’s eyelid, the wolf grumbled and shifted further into the sunlight. Finally, the brute gave in with a massive huff. By now he was lying upon his stomach, body stretched out vertically. Snorting, the wolf stood to attention before stretching out his bones and muscles giving a wide mouthed yawn ending with a smack. Maven and the other beast were not awake yet. That surprised Hawkeye. It was rare for him to be awake first. Rolling his shoulders out in another stretch, the male exited the small space. The sun’s brightness had Hawkeye blinking away tears. At last his eyes adjusted. The ground was littered with the heavy weight of snow. Hawkeye frowned to himself. It was supposed to be Spring soon and here was this gigantic pile of snow. Giving a snort, he strode through the snow breaking away a path. While on the way to finding his companions, he believed there was a small pond nearby. Maybe it wasn’t frozen. It took him a good couple of minutes but at last he found it. Pawing anxiously at the frozen pond, he broke through leaving a small hole. Hawkeye had his fill of bone chilling water before looking up with amazement. Several drops of water fell back into the pond with an audible splash. Before him stood a small white mass of fur that turned its horned head toward Hawkeye at the sound of his slurping. For a moment the two beasts stared at one another seeming surprised to have been caught in this moment alone. The female bighorn sheep suddenly gave a bellow pushing herself to her hooves. She managed to stumble three steps forward before falling to the ground rolling onto her side. The sheep gave a pained cry that hurt even Hawkeye’s ears. Cautiously the male strode forward frowning at the scene. What was it like to be unable to escape an approaching enemy? Knowing that within minutes you were most likely going to die? Hawkeye pulled his ears back frowning. Moments later he had put the bighorn sheep out of her misery. From what he could tell, she had broken her leg leaving her unable to find shelter. With the heavy snow storm, she was only minutes away from freezing to death anyhow. Shaking his head, Hawkeye grabbed onto her throat and began the process of dragging her back to their den. What a surprise it would be for the two! Hawkeye couldn’t help the smug look when thinking of Geist’s reaction. Although, Hawkeye, who was ever the good hunter, couldn’t claim this meal. It had been handed to him. He did nothing but the dirty work. At last he arrived dropping the carcass right outside the entrance. Yipping into the cave, he sat back waiting for Maven and Geist to wake up. @maven @geist |
