Castalia was terrified. The scent of it emanated from her in waves as she made her way through the dark, echoing cavern. Her fur bristled like a feline’s, her short, pup tail held straight out behind her like a tiny rod. Each step she took was stiff with fear and anxiety, and still… she pressed on. She had never ventured from the warmth and safety of her mother, and in this dank, mysterious environment, the young pup was definitely missing her mother’s ivory pelt and the steady thump of her heart. Why had she decided to wander off today? It’s not that she would get lost on her way back, necessarily, but this was unfamiliar territory. The cavern’s roof towered above her, growing taller as she made her way forward. Light blue orbs practically glowed in the gloom, flashing as they adjusted to each shadow. Her coat was darker than her sister’s, giving her better cover to sneak around, but then again, not many pelts were lighter than Artemis’s. Her ivory sister was a mirror image of their mother. Castalia looked more like her brother, the russet and auburn coloration of their coast like tiny flames among their other siblings.
Something had drawn her from the den this morning. She still wasn’t sure what it was, only that it seemed to draw each step from her paws like an unseen force. The steady drip of water drew a nervous shiver from her every time it echoed behind her. The air in here was so damp that Castalia could feel it start to gather on the top layer of her pelt like dew. She shook the droplets off, stumbling slightly as she continued forward.
Suddenly, the looming entrance of the cavern came into view as she trotted hesitantly around a bend, a true light at the end of the tunnel. Excitement replaced some of the auburn pup’s fear, spurring her on. For the first time since she came into this world, she was going to see what lay beyond the den. I am going to see it before anyone else! Her thoughts bubbled as she realized none of her siblings had yet to make this trip outside.

Notes | Sorry this is so terrible. I got a major headache after I started writing this, but wanted to get it up tonight. >.<
