The night was quiet – finally. All of the siblings were sound asleep, along with her mother who rested not too far from her in the cavern. She guessed a few of her brothers or sisters no longer slept in the den, finding comfort in their own maturing and reclusive lives – which meant it would be even easier for her to sneak away, unseen and unheard, with less bodies to clamber over. The fragile pup opened her eyes, ears flicking to judge the silence of her littermates, all of whom were vastly more enormous than her, they could barely be considered youths any more. Soundless as she crept to her feet, Pandora padded towards the mouth of the cave, eyes searching through the dimness for an even darker figure huddled close to the cave’s entrance – alone, even while sleeping. Poor boy.
She approached silently, prodding his side with her petite snout. “Onyx – wake up,” she breathed quietly, her figure hunched low against him. She knew her siblings would heavily disapprove of her fraternising with the outsider, but Pandora prided herself on always being an open-minded individual. She harboured no resentment at all for this boy – heck, he was the most interesting thing to walk into their den since…. Ever.
“Onyx,” she nudged him again, her voice lowering slightly. “The voices won’t sleep, so I can’t either,” she climbed over him, scampering towards the outside of the den, certain he would follow her. The tiny femme feared nothing, ignorantly so – and in that moment, she wanted nothing more than to play with the girly-smelling boy, away from the prying and disdainful eyes of her brothers and sisters. They always called him cruel names, too caught up in their own brutishness to play nice, and though she was too small to stand up for him, she was always there, quietly beside him in silent empathy of his foreign status. If no one else on the entire island would be his friend, then she would have to be the one.
