History: Veritaewas welcomed into the world by loving parents as the second pup of three, though the world she knew was bitterly cold in the northern regions of Canada. Her small family was her only pack, but she enjoyed romping with her two brothers, learning the art of hunting, and singing to the stars. She found she had a great affinity for swimming through the icy water, one of the few areas she could best her brothers. At their first birthday, the male pups spent more time with Dad to learn more honed fighting and hunting techniques, while Veritae went with her mother on other hunting excursions where they could talk openly about the powerful ways a young female could best serve her pack and her family. Veritae, an eager student, absorbed every word of each lesson.
The tranquility of the family's simple life was quickly overturned by the arrival of poachers to their territory. Veritae and her family managed to elude the humans' detection for several months, but as the poachers became more persistent and gathered more numbers, there were few places left to protect the wolf clan. Just one week before the pups'second birthday, the poachers made their attack. The loving lupine parents fought valiantly to protect their young, but to no avail. They gave their lives and their pelts in sacrifice, and Veritae and the pups were divided among the different poacher groups. That was the last Veritae was ever to see of her brothers again.
Her trials, however, were just beginning. The team that had captured her were headed for Africa by boat, to avoid detection by airport security. The seas were not kind during the voyage, and never before had Veritae felt so sick, so afraid, or so lonely. After months of roundabout travel, the band reached their port of destination, a run-down village filled with underhanded merchants. Veritae was the new commodity for sale, a far cry from the lion pelts and ivory tusks being sold by local vendors. The heat was more than she could stand, and she was never let out of her steel cage, sleeping every night in her own filth. Though she was the talk of the town there were no buyers to rescue her from her prison. One cloudy afternoon, however, a young zookeeper from a large city spotted her and couldn't get her out of her cage fast enough. It took almost all the money he had, but to him it was well worth the cost of a life. He gave her food and a few days to rest before bringing her back to the zoo where he was from.
Veritae was to become part of an inter-zoobreeding program for her species, but veterinary check-ups found some issues. Whetherby birth or by the stress of her experiences, Veritae did not go through heat cycles as adult females should. Every test was run, and treatment options were suggested, buteach answer came back with no chance for breeding. Though she could not understand what the humans said, Veritae knew something was wrong with her, and the exact source ofher ailment was confirmed by the location of focus of her examinations. She fell into a deep depression, and even the zookeeper who saved her could no longer bring her tail to even twitch. The keeper, pained by her acute change in demeanor, made a bold decision to release her; though the zoo managers were likely to be furious,he felt it was the only thing that could help Veritae truly heal. As he opened the gate to her cage, Veritae approached cautiously, licked the keeper's hand quickly and dashed into the night.
All Veritae knew is that she needed to find the ocean again; it was what brought her over to this god-forsaken place, it was what could bring her back home. She searched relentlessly, guided by the sun and stars, until she found it. The water was such a welcome sight to her that she jumped in immediately and began swimming as fast as she could. Lack of exercise and practice had left her worse for wear, so it was not long before she was back on the shore, dreaming of what awaited on the other side. She spent the next month relearning her most basic lessons of swimming and hunting, and learning new ones like beggingfrom locals and stealing from their stores. When she next attempted her swim, she had little difficulty in keeping up a consistent pace. However, she found land much sooner than anticipated, and instead of frozen ice caps she found lush forests. The trees, though new to her, were a welcome sight. She forayed onward confidently to her future, for she had found the island of Anikira.
Personality: Veritae is first and foremost compassionate, always desiring the best for others even to her own detriment. As such, she is very attentive to the needs of any pack she may be part of and eager to respect the authorities in place, and encourage others to do likewise. She is also a playful spirit who loves to experience the joys of being alive and pass that joy on to those around her. She has a great deal of insecurity as female because of her inability to breed, but takes pride in the roles she does have. This also makes her rather shy around available males, as she feels she has less to offer than her peers do. Balanced with her kindness is a keen sense of cunning and intelligence, which she uses to outwit friends and prey alike. She greatly enjoys the hunt and providing food for her pack family, though she finds camouflaging rather difficult. She also loves to tell stories and share lessons from what she has learned through her own life experiences. She feels most alive at night, when most others are already asleep, and she calls to the stars and resonates with the souls of her parents and brothers.
