Lightning danced across the sky, and thunder rolled overhead as the white wolf moved along, her seafoam eyes upon the ridge that would bring her into the forest proper. Though the rain had not yet begun to fall, Octavia was sure it would, and she impatiently awaited the moment when she could revel in the cool liquid upon her skin. Turning her head to look over her shoulder, the petite female smiled back at her dark sister, wagging her tail slightly. "Come on, Harper, let's get over into the new forest!" she called excitedly, before turning back and hoping her sister would follow closely.
Though it had been a while since she had an episode, it was always possible that just the thought of Harper leaving her or just not being there could trigger one, and Octavia would rather be safe than sorry. That was why she had begged her larger sister to come along; besides the obvious fact that they would be safer together, she wanted to be sure there would be no hiccups. Since Amara had introduced them to the pack, Tavia had spent every spare moment getting further and further from the den site, determined to explore every inch of Kal'dyne that was available to her. The basin had been vast and empty, but the promising young forest just over the rocky barrier was tantalizing and sure to contain everything the pups would need for a good time--prey, shrubbery, and water. Besides, it wold bring them full-circle and back home, in case Amara decided she wouldn't let the girls stay out so far from the majority of the pack.
As the sandy ground turned to hard stone, Octavia's heart sped up and she laughed out loud, shifting her pace into a run as she moved quickly up the slope of the ridge. It was short and easy to climb, and she stumbled only once when a bit of rock slipped out from under her. Recovering quickly, the young wolf reached the top and stared up at the sky above the forest, sensing the coming rain ready to fall. "It's soon. I can tell!" she said to the sky, her face lighting up from within and without as an impressive lighting bolt cut the sky in half, very nearly catching the tops of the small trees. Oblivious to the danger of standing above them on the ridge, Tavia took a few moments to gather herself up in order to brave this brand new land.
It was the last place left for her to explore, so without much hesitation she looked around for a way down the other side of the ridge, and found it in the form of a dirt slide. With an exuberant laugh she pranced over and jumped, hitting the ground and sliding on her four paws down to the bottom, where she promptly lost her balance. Over the wolf toppled, rolling for several yards before a thick bush caught her, leaving the young pup nearly upside-down with all four feet in the air. Giggling uncontrollably, she found her footing again and righted herself, glancing back toward where she assumed Harper would be, which was just cresting the ridge. "I'm off! Come on, Harper, this is great!"
Still laughing and with no concern for what may lie ahead, Octavia darted into the thin forest, dodging trunks that could have been as young as she was. The land was dry, suffering from the summer heat, and very nearly begging for the rain that hovered in the clouds above. Still it wouldn't fall, but Tavia knew it would come, and so on she ran, not a care in the world, her sister somewhere behind. The browning grass made her movements loud, but no danger seemed to be imminent as the storm was keeping most creatures at bay.
Tavia reached a small clearing and skidded to a stop to again watch the sky, more eager than ever for the downpour that had to be coming. What she saw, however, was several lightning strikes that danced just outside the clearing where she and Harper had paused, hitting the ground with incredible force that shook the ground underneath them and causing the loudest cracks of thunder she had ever heard. With a cry the female pulled her ears back against her skull, lowering her head as the sound started to ring nearly inside her skull. Green eyes closed tightly as the pain rang through her, but they snapped open again as a sharp scent hit her nose.
It was harsh and foul, but she could not place the smell until she looked around, eyes widened in horror. The dry grass had caught fire in when the rogue lightning had struck the ground, and it had quickly spread. Terrified, the small female pressed against her sister while looking around, watching, frozen, as flames consumed smaller trees and brush within seconds. The two were surrounded, as far as she could tell, and fear kept her feet firmly planted where they were as it washed over her. The smoke started soon after, and she began to cough uncontrollably as it seared her lungs.
"Harper!" she moaned pitifully between coughs, her eyes shut tight against the burning caused by the caustic smoke. Her whole body was in pain, and there was nothing to be done for it; when the light-headedness began, Octavia felt herself falling to the ground, her muscles not responding to the part of her brain that screamed at them to move. It took only seconds after the fall for her to lose consciousness for the last time.
