Agoge. The thing that his mother had been preparing him for his whole young life was finally here and now it was time for him to depart his birthplace. If he wanted to return home and achieve his goal of becoming a warrior he would need to bring an egg back with him. The birds he was supposed to face were supposedly terrifyingly large creatures, yet he was supposed to steal an egg. Not only were his strength and fighting skills being tested, but also his intelligence and his cunning. He couldn't survive out there on his brawn alone. His uncles were on the mainland to aid in the training of the youths, but having never met them, Hyperion was a little skeptical about their help. The sheer number of youths flocking to the mainland was enormous, mainly comprised of his siblings and Titan's offspring. One of his uncles had also just been blessed with the gift of three sons and a daughter, something the young wolf had wanted to see before he left. Sabaoth's mate however wasn't allowing visitors to see the pups and Hyperion could not hold off leaving any longer. His time had come and despite being reluctant to leave his home and the company of his mother, he journeyed to the coast. All of the familiar scents that belonged to his family and his pack would fade with the rising water and he would soon be left with nothing but memories of home. He would have to survive on the mainland on his own. He was determined to survive on his own merit even if it meant failure. His sisters, Nimue and Morrigan, had left Kairos and his brother Croix wasn't his favorite sibling. All he had left now were his mother and sister Fawn. Both so small and delicate.
Hyperion had never given much thought to taking a female, but he supposed he would like one as small and delicate as the majority of Kairos females. His larger pack mates didn't appeal to him in the same way. The time for that was long in the distance however, for he needed to focus on the task at hand. He would need to be disciplined if he meant to gain an egg. His paws brushed along the sandy beach of Ina'mos and he almost wanted to turn back. The Agoge was going to push him past everything that he had ever known and a part of him was terrified. He had spent his whole childhood dreaming of becoming a warrior, practicing and playing. Now the time was here and he was so scared that he would never see his home again. One who failed the Agoge was a shame to his family and Hyperion would never return to plague his family. The wind was cold along his back, ruffling his fur as he waded into the tidal waters. Small waves crashed against the rocky shore and the further in he went the colder it got. He had waited to long and the warm summer waters had fled with the fall rains. The water made it up to his shoulder and then further until his whole body was submerged except for his face. His young legs began to paddle and for the first stretch he became numb to the cold. His legs pushed and pulled jetting him further from his home with each stroke. It wasn't long until it had faded enough that he knew he couldn't make it back. The only way to go was forward.
His fur flowed with the water and before long the numbing sensation had faded leaving him cold again. This time was worse than before and caused Hyperion's lungs to ache with the cold. As he pushed on he began to see a silhouette in the distance. The mainland was coming into his sight, yet it looked impossibly small. The distance seemed too far for a young wolf to travel. His legs were cramping and his breathing was getting harder with every breath. He felt as if he might freeze in he water without ever even making it to the island. Would he be as much as a failure if he never even made it to the Agoge? If the water simply swallowed him whole? He couldn't fathom what challenge could await him that would be worse than the swim. He envied those of his half-siblings who had made it to the mainland swimming in the warmer waters, but it was his own reluctance and stupidity that was punishing him now. The only thing that kept his legs moving was the thought of disappointing his mother. He cared naught for anyone else within his pack. He needed to make his mother proud, prove that her son was worthy. Goliath had so many other children that were the pride and joy of Kairos. With the departure of his sisters Hyperion felt the pressure more than anything else to make it within the pack. To push past his relatives and shine amongst them.
The only approval he sought was that of his mother. Pushing harder and harder he forced his frozen legs to move, despite the pain. He was out of breath, but with each movement he was one step closer to his goal. He couldn't quit pushing until he had reached his goal. He was still young, only 8 months old, and hadn't reached his full weight or strength. His body wasn't toned with struggle, it was the lanky uncoordinated body of a youth, yet Hyperion knew that with the Agoge his body would be transformed into that of a warrior. He would struggle until he had reached everything that he ever wanted. Determination spread through him and he grit his teeth, his will taking him closer to the island. The waves soon began to pull him in and it was with an exhausted huff that he was tossed upon the shoreline. He could smell the faded scents of his family members that had come before him. They were too many in number for him to place them all, but he could smell the underlying traces of Kairos. Mixed in with the youths he could also smell the other males scents. Instead of following those scents he moved away from them to a place that was dry. It was warmer here than the water was and his shaking legs collapsed underneath him. Lying on his side all he could do was take slow breaths to try and revive himself. He would need water soon, but rest pushed too hard and her could fight it off no more. His vision blurred and he decided to let the sleep overtake it rather than fight it off anymore.
