Harsh wind cut through the soft fur of a wolf pup as he loped along, moving through the chilly territory with both wonder and fear evident in his face and form. Kegan was tiny, just a boy, but he was growing quickly, and spending time outside of the den and stretching his legs had become one of his favorite activities. Naturally, he would not stray far; fear gripped his small heart easily, and he preferred to be close to his family, unlike his three other siblings. The group loved to explore and push boundaries, and were often reprimanded by both their mother and father for pushing too far. Delicate little Kegan, on the other hand, would hardly venture past the trees around the dens, and never ever went out of sight of the cave entrance.
He hardly wanted to, anyway, for the pup could not guarantee that his family would be close by if he didn't stay where they were supposed to. Kegan loved that Roka had implemented the rule that they must stay close, for it kept them as close as could be expected of young pups. As long as they were nearby, Kegan felt comfortable being outside of the den, which was why he had ventured out today. The family was sleeping, bodies curled together to keep warm, but the smallest boy had woken with an urge, and had not wanted to wake the others up quite yet.
So outside he had gone, moving as quietly as his inexperienced paws knew how, sniffing the ground robustly with his teeny nose and wagging his awkward tail fiercely. The weeks had been rough for them all, growing into their gigantic paws and learning to carry themselves without falling over, but each pup had taken the challenges in stride, including little Kegan. It had surprised even himself when he chose to take chances, for he had been timid nearly from birth, but being pushed around by his larger siblings had helped him toughen up a bit.
The one thing he would not overcome, however, was the crippling fear that often stole his confidence and left him frozen. It seemed to be completely random, but generally happened when he was--or even simply felt--completely alone. In the dens, he never really could be on his own, for it was always stuffed with his family, but if they were all out of sight, he would often times cry out in dismay and rush to find them. Thankfully, they were never far, and his mind was eased almost as quickly as it had been troubled.
Today was different. Today, Kegan had left the den on his own, instead of being left inside by himself, and making the choice to be alone felt much better than being abandoned. A goofy grin split his lips as he lifted his head to the sky, watching the gray cloud roll overhead, growling as though they were angry with the earth. It seemed as though it would rain, but the heavens held on to whatever precipitation roiled above him. Even if it was simply cloudy all morning, Kegan would keep his head up in wonderment, oblivious of his surroundings. Luckily, there was not much danger around the dens, for the pup would have been an easy snack, paying as little attention as he was.
