Inara continued padding through the interior of Ina’mos, wanting to become more familiar with the small island. She knew she could not stay long, having already been here a while and needing to return to the mainland sometime soon, but for now she was enjoying the solitude. Despite that, the swamp had an almost eerie feel to it. Every noise made her ears twitch, and she worked to keep her paw steps light and noiseless.
Unfortunately, not being familiar with the island and its terrain included not being aware of the potential dangers. Of course, Inara confidently told herself she was not afraid and was ready to handle any challenge, no matter what it may be. She had to. It was how she operated and thought about everything. She needed to know she was the best and could do anything and take care of herself.
But it did not take long before she came across a familiar scent. Fawn? Had the dappled she-wolf also returned to Ina’mos, the place they had met, after the conquest? Inara thought back to that meeting. It had been odd, for certain, and she felt heat rising as she remembered the embarrassment Typhon had put her through in front of Fawn. Perhaps she should not seek her out. Yes, the best course of action would be to avoid an awkward encounter, she decided.
Quickly, Inara turned around and determined to go back the way she had come. She had seen enough of the swamp, and she felt like her image and identity had been shattered in front of this she-wolf. There was no way Fawn would ever see her the way she wished to be seen now. It was better this way. They would not need interact again, she hoped. But as she turned around, the Iranian did not pay attention to where her feet should go and stepped on a snake.
The sharp hissing sound caught her attention and her heart began to race as she hopped backward just as fast, unfortunately stumbling over brush and twigs. After her initial shock and reaction, the wolf kept slowly backing up until she was a safe distance from the disgusting creature and watched it carefully. It seemed to not wish to have this fight and slithered off after a bit, giving Inara a chance to catch her breath and realize the pad of her paw was bleeding. What had she cut it on? She had been certain everything in this place was too damp and moist to be able to inflict any damage on anything, and yet the red liquid slowly pooled up into a drop on her paw and fell to the ground. With a sigh, Inara sat down and began to lick her wounded paw, giving no more thought to the she-wolf that must be nearby or the amount of noise her carelessness had caused.
