The wolf crouched behind the rare piece of shrubbery, his brown eyes fixed on a fairly distant object. Despite the dunes rising and falling around him, Kegan could clearly see the edge of a nest and a rustle of movement. He was nervous; the feathers that were in his view were only a fraction of the beast he was hoping to outsmart, and despite his relatively large size, the moa was quite a bit larger and definitely more formidable. Even if it wasn't protecting a nest, the flightless bird would be twice as dangerous as he was, though not from lack of trying.
During his time in the Agoge, Kegan had not dealt with his siblings so much as he had local wildlife, for which he was infinitely grateful. Liadan had done him little good, though she hadn't hurt him any more than usual, and the strange black wolf who had assaulted them shortly after he arrived on the island certainly did nothing to help him along--being teased and taunted was not what he had come here for, but it wasn't as though he hadn't accepted it. The young male had simply hoped there would come a time where he was greeted with a smile instead of a sneer.
That would not be today; no, today was the day he would retrieve his egg at last. All he needed to do was wait for the massive moa to step away for a moment, and he could swoop in, nab the egg, and run off again. But it had been ages, and yawn after yawn was released from the wolf while the bird moved hardly and inch. It was long, boring work, and Kegan was quite far from the nest to stay hidden; the beast would have to move quite a ways off before he could do what needed to be done, and it appeared that he did not want to move at all.
When the feathers, then, suddenly moved out of sight with a screech, Kegan jumped to his feet, body shaking in anticipation. The screeching of the bird continued, getting quieter, and the young wolf stealthily moved forward, placing his oversized paws quickly and quietly moving his lithe body closer to his goal. Though his brown eyes were trained only on the egg, looking bigger and bigger as he approached, Kegan kept his ears and nose occupied with the bird, in case it was circling back to attack him. Without a problem, he reached the nest and snatched the egg up into his jaws, surprised by the weight of it, and turned just in time to see the massive bird racing back toward him, beak open to let out a shrill, deafening scream.
Wheeling around, the wolf slipped a little in the sand before he gained his footing and bolted, seeming to fly through the dunes with his prize as the parent charged after him, more furious than Liadan had been when that black wolf had pounced her. The bird was very unhappy, and Kegan felt as though he had been running forever through the dunes when it finally gave up the chase, whirling back to its nest as though it had just remembered the other egg.
Kegan went ever further despite the bird having turned around, just in case, and dropped the egg at his feet carefully so that he could breathe. His chest heaved with effort, almost as much as it had after his swim, and he panted for quite a while before he was able to calm his racing heart. It was the most exciting and terrifying thing he had ever done, and the male was glad it was over; with luck he would be able to tote the same egg all the way back to the island, for if it broke he didn't think he could manage to find another, nor to retrieve it.
