Stepping out of the mine and back into the sunlight forced the great brute to blink several times before his eyes fully adjusted to the sudden change. Once they were fitted to the amount of light that streamed down, Exodus started forward with his nose in the air. At first, no game’s scent touched his blackened snout. It was not until Exodus was nearly up at the summit that the scent of elk wavered into his nose and caused his stomach to tighten and growl in hunger. He had failed to realize just how long it had been since his last meal. Grimacing, the brute prayed that his stomach would behave and that it would not alert his prey to his presence. As he moved, the graceful and steady brute watched his step. He knew all too well that hidden holes could cause his death and that would not be a good thing. Not to mention, dying by way of falling off a cliff… Ah, where’s the nobility in that. It’s nothing but stupidity on his own part for having not watched his step.
Arriving at the summit proved to be worthwhile. Before him, a herd of elk grazed peacefully in their never ending quest to find food during the summer months. Scanning the numerous elk to pick out the best to go after, Exodus watched each and everyone carefully to make sure that his success rate would be high. Not only did he need food, but so did just about everyone else in the pack. He’d been away for a long time and had left everything in the paws of Taurus. It was high time Exodus did something his self. This small hunt would be enough to get things heading in the right direction. It was several long minutes before the alpha had picked out his perfect target. The elk he picked was pretty small for its species but seeing as Exodus was a lone that was best. It also had a small limp that would aid its demise. The only problem was that it was a buck. The antlers on it, while small too, could still do damage.
Once Exodus hoped over this small ridge that provided his shelter, there was nothing that would keep him from behind seen by the herd. While they weren’t that far away, they weren’t too close either. Exodus assumed that the limp of his target would slow it down enough to be killed. Now. To put the plan in action. Gathering up the necessary emotions and feelings, the dark demon suddenly busted from his hiding spot and lunged forward. The herd all bellowed in fear and began to scatter. The target, as Exodus though, was slower yet still fast enough to keep distance between himself and the wolf. Not allowing himself to go back to the mines without good, Exodus growled and picked up his pace. Within seconds, he was able to snap at the stag’s legs. A loose rock found its way underneath Exodus’ paw and caused the brute to lose balance for a short second. In that short second, the stag kicked out.
The hoof connected with the top of the alpha’s snout and pushed him downward which almost made him fall again. To compensate for the lost balance, Exodus slowed his pace and let the target limp ahead while he waited for the flaring, throbbing pain to cease a little and his balance could be regained. When it was eventually, Exodus picked up his speed again and snapped angrily at the heels of the best before him. One of his snaps did serious damage to the male elk’s leg and its limp worsened. Soon, it began to slow until it eventually stopped and faced Exodus ready to put on a one on one fight. Bellowing, the elk scraped in desperation at the air with his antlers in hopes of scaring Exodus off. However, that was not the case.
Growling, Exodus took a step toward the beast but was forced to back off as the elk tossed its head angrily, fighting for his survival. Scampering quickly to the side of the elk, Exodus went in and snapped again at the legs of the elk and again caused damage. Backing off, the wolf noted how the elk was nearing its end. As he stood there panting heavily, the alpha began to noticed the change in the elk’s tactic. Before another thought could come to him, the heavy animal lunged forward in a vicious charge. Any other beast may have run in fright, yet Exodus actually lunged toward the elk. It caught the animal off guard but its momentum was too great. Seconds later, the two collided with Exodus’ teeth sunk into the elk’s fur covered throat. Minutes later, the elk lay dead and Exodus stood over his prize in a victorious and triumphant stance.
“Thank you for giving us life, Elk.” Exodus muttered as he nodded to the limp form. Grabbing a back leg, the Alpha attempted to take his prize back down to the mines. It would be no easy feat.
