A full year had passed since the birth of three Salen heirs. Two males and a female roamed the pack lands, learning all they knew about being productive, strong adults. Not that their training had had much effect on their personalities. Functionality did not outweigh bad genetic breeding. As Meridian sat atop Ryn Eldbel, she was not focused on the applications of her "father's" teachings. Her less than perfect mind had wandered elsewhere, as it often did, lost to the realities of a disillusioned mind.
The thin, lithe form of the only daughter was sitting still as a statue at the edge of the ridge, jade eyes staring listlessly into space. Or so it seemed. In truth, the young female was focused on the fluttering form of a dragonfly only she could see, following it's every move as it danced haphazardly across her line of vision. It seemed to be coaxing her forward, trying to will her to jump from her high above perch. But move she did not. For possibly the first time in her life she wasn't not listening to the creature. Of course, for the first time in her life the creature was trying to do unjust harm to only herself.
Meridian had noticed a number of changes lately. Yes, she was older now and full grown. But her family's dynamic was changing. Her mother's presence was scarcer than normal, and on the rare occasions she did see Denali the female appeared to be plumper. It seemed another litter of pups were on their way; Meridian would have more siblings. But did she want more brothers and sisters? Already she was the most distant of the three children, only bothering to engage with them whenever they caught up to her. How was she supposed to treat these new lives when she barely knew how to interact with those her own age and older?
The female shook her head, clearing her mind of the stray thoughts and in the process making the dragonfly disappear. It was the first movement she'd made in more than an hour. The stiffness of her muscles prompted her to finally move as reality once again settled in around her. The bones of her spine cracked and popped as she backed herself into a stretching bow. But her awareness had yet to fully settle in, and if anyone had been watching her she was completely oblivious.
