Toiro raised his muzzle and let out a long, clear howl.
“Kastiel. It is time. Meet me here, at the edge of the forest where the great pine tree stands. Come as soon as you are ready, but make sure you’ve eaten beforehand. It will be a long journey”
As he lowered his head, a sense of finality reached him. This was it. This was really it. Three times he had tried to leave, but just as he was about to go something had distracted him. This time, though, he was sure nothing would stop them. The land was finally ready to let them go, although only for a little while. Toiro was sure that Valmai, Bear and Spirit, and the newest member of the pack, Haze, would look after the territory while he and Kastiel were away.
Then why was he still feeling reluctant to go? Toiro pawed at the ground anxiously, once again wondering if it was really a good idea to leave the territory so soon after he had claimed it. Relax Toiro, it’ll be fine. You’ll only be gone for a short time anyway; and the things you learn from the other alphas will be beneficial for Airila. And anyway, it’s an adventure! You know you love adventures… and how many other opportunities are you going to get to explore Anikira? This may be your last chance.
Toiro took a deep breath, inhaling all the scents of his home. He knew he would go on this quest, as soon as he’d made up his mind about it he knew nothing would stop him. Not potential new members, not distractions and other things to do, not his own reluctance to leave the new pack without a leader. He was a stubborn young wolf, and he knew that when he made up his mind about something, he would go through with it.
Now that his worries had been put aside, the excitement began to take hold. He found that he couldn’t lie still, so he stood and started pacing across the clearing as he waited for his friend to arrive. After a while, he realised that he should conserve his stamina, so he tried to calm himself by sitting down amongst the needles at the base of the great pine, where he hoped the strong aroma would soothe his nerves.
He briefly wondered whether Kastiel shared his excitement about their adventure, and if he did, whether he was having the same problem containing it. A sound like a half-laugh, half-bark escaped from his mouth. The idea of Kastiel bouncing around like a pup was ludicrous.
Toiro flicked his ears, dismissing the thought, and returned to a more serious mindset.
He gazed up at the silhouette of an eagle gliding through the clear blue sky high above his head. When he spoke it was nothing more than a murmur, barely heard by even his own ears.
“I will return to you, Airila, but first I must see the world”
